Ioannis, Jairo and Deborah of the Space Ape Games team scored another interview with IDW Transformers talent, this time with Galaxies Constructicons Rising author Tyler Bleszinski, as part of their Seek & Destroy event live stream.
(Edited for length and clarity)
Tell us about how you got started in comics.
“I started a company a long time ago called Vox Media, it started out basically as a sports blogging company then morphed into something else… I wound up leaving that company in 2015 and decided that I wanted to get involved with the Transformers franchise somehow. I started banging on IDW’s door, I went to a lot of conventions, basically pressed the flesh as they say and met as many people as I could. That’s honestly the best way to get involved with it, obviously you need some good ideas to get their attention as well.
I always dreamt of being able to tell a Constructions origins story, since “The Secret of Omega Supreme” cartoon [episode]. It always bugged me that the Robo-Smasher turned them and they didn’t have any say in their turn to be Decepticons, so I always had an idea in my head to write stories about the Constructicons and tell their story about how they became Decepticons.”
What’s your best advice for anyone who wants to write comics?
“You need to put yourself out there. The artist that wound up working on my comic is Livio Ramondelli, who [completed a commission for my son] a long time ago and that’s how I met him at WonderCon. I got him on board with the idea of [Constructicons Rising]. If you get an artist on board with your idea, and you get [them] passionate about it, that helps a lot too.”
What was it like when you first saw your comic printed?
“Amazing, I actually got emotional about it. I’m going to reveal this here: the planet the Constructions are trapped on, [Mayalx], is a combination of my two kids’ names, Maya and Alex. In issue #4, if you’re eagle-eyed, there’s also an homage to Transformers Earth Wars. I actually had Livio put “I225U” in one of the panels, which is something that we say in Scorched; when we perfectly run through another alliance, we say [that] in the chat.”
Do you have any other stories planned for the Constructicons?
“I’ve been talking with my editor at IDW about taking the Constructicons story to the next level; I would love to tell the story of how they get fully into the Decepticon fold.”
