Though Power Of The Primes Leader Class Wave 1 figures are yet to be spotted at retail, we have our first in-hand video of Rodimus Prime, all the way from China.
The video is approximately 30 minutes long and highlights the transformation and other major points.
Update: Another 15 minute long video (and again from China) has surfaced which highlights much the same.
An “Evolution Leader”, Rodimus Prime is formed from a smaller “Hot Rod” car robot, who combines with his trailer to become Rodimus Prime. The figure includes a Matrix, which the core can detach from and interchange with other Prime Masters.
You can check out both videos, after the jump.

I felt pretty much the exact same way the first time holding it in hand. Excitement turn to WTF after a few passes with the eyes.

Wow. Saw this guy in person at a used shop to check him out. I’ll be damned that the shoulders lack articulation toward the arm. They only turn from the body and not the top of the arm. I just couldn’t get any decent arm poses from what I wanted. He was going for 7,560 yen. Max I would pay is 3,000. But even then, I went from wanting this figure to putting it in my no thanks list. WTF happened with this particular toy??
Gamerlingual
Any chance to buy this guy for under $40 with shipping? Any recommendations? Is he really that disastrous?

Yeah.. blame the animation colors from the movie, season 3 to 4.
Hot Rod or Rodimus have like 2 to 3 color palettes / shades.
Blame AKOM.
Sometimes he's pink, sometimes he's red, sometimes he's dark red

i display him in this configuration….

I believe it is because in the show, Hot Rod was a lighter/magenta color, while Rodimus was a darker/maroon color, and they wanted to bring that to the toy.
It is distracting and they really should have just gone with one shade.

For those pissed off with his hollow butt-hole in his rodimus mode, you can easily pop out that part if you want.

Now that I've got my PotP Rodimus, I have a couple of comments.
First off, WTF were they thinking, making the trailer and the Hot Rod figure two different colors of plastic? The two-tone quality in combined robot mode is teeth-grinding.
Second, the arms of Hot Rod are not *quite* as bad in person as they were in photos, but I still dislike them intensely. They ruin what could have been a decent CHUG-scale G1-ish Hot Rod.
Third, I've heard several reviewers (such as Emgo) claim the Combined Vehicle mode is the only good mode. Um. No. It's barely adequate. It feels like one of those comedy stretched limos, only it's a stretched space winnebago. And yes, the exposed fists are just irritating.
For me, the Combined Robot Mode is the most tolerable mode. The articulation is spotty in places (looking at you, shoulders), but the longer i have it, the more it's grown on me. It's *definitely* a different take on Rodimus Prime, but I like it. Definitely glad I managed to snag it for MSRP, without the usual online markup, or even *shudder* Ebay Scalper prices. $40 was more than enough for this figure, thanks.
I really hope Perfect Effect or another company does a complete "replacement" Hot Rod figure. Design it so the plastics color match, do *something* with the Hot Rod arms, and tweak it so the shoulders in Combined Robot Mode have more natural articulation. That's my Ideal Fantasy 3P Hot Rod Replacement.
A good budget option would be some kind of arm replacer for Hot Rod. Hell, I don't care if it has to be parts-forming, requiring me to swap arms around to change between modes, if it fixes those ungodly things. Hell, just a tiny feature like making the fists rotate would allow us to fix the "exposed tiny fists" thing in combined mode.
Oh, and toss in some kind of cover for the fists in Vehicle mode for a couple extra bucks. =)
I'd normally think such desires completely delusional, but after PE blew me away with their "fix kits" for Ginrai/Powermaster Optimus, such a thing is no longer without precedent.

Yeah some people are just happy to finally be getting that Rodimus Prime. But sadly I'm not. All I need is a decent Voyager class Rodimus that doesn't tower over Galvatron.
This was what I was going for…. I don't like that tall version at all but I was willing to buy it for the smaller portion and the Space Winnebago but even both of those look crappy.
If it ends up in clearance at Target or online for half off I may eventually get it as a place holder but beyond that…PASS!
ultramagnus1
I definitely see the smaller bot as a "regular," rodimus and the combined mode super rodimus.

i hear ya buddy, tat's y im skipping potp leader optimus as well…the orion-truck mode is a cluster fucking mess. hope some 3p like perfect effect or dr WU would come into the rescue… but i did get this leader rodimus bcoz i missed out on the original g1 version… hate his blocky backpack…again hope some 3p will remedy it..

This is probably why ppl keep calling the smaller figure Hot Rod… CUZ IT SAYS SO ON THE BOX

I just leave TR Galvatron in cannon mode.

I've chimed in on several threads about this figure…..so I'll do so here too.
If a toy's awesomeness is based solely on "how much I fiddle/play/transform/admire/pose/etc", this this toy is one of the most awesome I've bought in a while. (Prime too)
I simply love everything about it; even it's shortcomings. (which I admittedly fixed myself; ie silver rims, blue fists)
Thylacine2000
Apart from the stickers this is a superb toy. Very fun transformation, great engineering. I really think they deliberately made him look as much like a late G1 toy as possible. To the point where it looks like you'd have seen it on the same shelf as the original Powermaster Prime.

TR Galvatron has little man syndrome next to him but the Open and Play version looks pretty goodView attachment 27895136 View attachment 27895137 .
Predakwon
Any pics of him next to TR Galvatron?

I am just waiting for this guy to be on sale. And when he does, I will buy him. The Hot Rod will be Rodimus Prime on my display. Scales well with CW Ultra Magnus IMO.
Rodimus Prime
It's not perfect, but I really enjoy it. Fiddled with it far more than most other figures I get. My only complaint is the vehicle mode is a nightmare (back end of the car with the legs attaching) to get right without breaking something.
deathzero23
Hasbro could've just made the backpack fold-type panels.
It's like a "incomplete" toy.
