And now for something a bit old-school, thanks to The Spacebridge Facebook page, who has taken the storyboards used in the production of the 1986 Transformers movie and created animated storyboard videos from them, showing off two deleted/rewritten scenes.
Video 1: Devastator falls- “I have included a section of the film either side so you can see where it would have fit in. I believe this scene was animated as it exists in very late production notes & music was written to accompany it. It was cut as Nelson Shin felt it ruined the flow of Primes attack leading up to his battle with Megatron. Ultra Magnus, Tracks, Sideswipe & Red Alert were picked to attack Devastator as they all have rocket launchers. It also explains what Megatron was looking at when Prime found him.”
Video 2: Ultra Magnus’s original death- “In the storyboards Ultra Magnus had a much more barbaric death at the hands of the Sweeps. As you can see in the video, he is literally pulled apart. This scene was animated but removed due to concerns over the violence. There are many clues in the film that this scene should still be there. The audio matches this version exactly, Magnus sounds like he is being pulled apart. You see the Sweeps fire out 4 solid beams towards Magnus. Finally Galvatron catches the Matrix when it falls perfectly into his hands from above.”
Big thanks to The Spacebridge for sharing these videos with us!

Ancient thread I know, but what did the deleted footage you saw entail? Did it include the other deaths, Ultra Magnus berating Hot Rod, etc?

hey paul hows the potential autbot city battle coming along,
im on a bit of a movie 86 nostalgia trip, and im reading up on all the known info,
would love to see what happends if you find the time to complete this battle.

This movie could be revoiced without all that 80's music in the weirdest of places. Actually, since it's a cartoon, it'd be interesting to see it rescripted as well. Are there any fan versions?

It was me that made all of those storyboard videos
They can be found on my Youtube page here

i know this is necro sorry, but just saw this thread and such.
Personally i would love to see the deleted scenes put into a dvd as a special edition. But some of the names listed were in the japan version of transformers which takes place after return of optimus prime and before rebirth, but what we do know is hasbro wanted to wipe out the orginal line, but jazz we know did survive along with cliffjumper and bumblebee at the end of the orginal movie. So i would say season 3 just had most of them retire that survived.
Now personally what I would love to see is a new animated movie of generation 1 with all the way up until season 3, can you imagine the fights between the combiners? but that is my opinion

I wish I could get the storyboards for the full shuttle attack scene with the unused segment at the beginning. I could probably turn that into an animated storyboard sequence if I had enough material.

These are great!
Thank you!

I own 3 original copies of production used storyboards & a separate set of storyboards for an alternate opening credits scene
All 3 are different as they come from different stages of the production
I've toyed with doing a book of some kind as I also own all the original click tracks & hand written score by Vince DiCola. I might do something one day
My next project is to animated the entire autobot battle with all the deleted scenes from the storyboards

Here's the thread I started on the IDW forums.
IDW Publishing Forums • View topic – Transformers The Movie – complete storyboards
I don't deal with reddit much but if someone wants to mention it there or any other sites where there might be some interest, you're free to do so if you think it would help.

Do you remember how much they were?

Show me what I have to do and I'll help!
Don't forget to post this on Reddit as well

I emailed Jim Sorenson to ask if there was a possibility that the storyboards for the movie could be published. He said that he has access to them but it's a question of whether or not the demand would justify the cost of publishing and suggest I start a post on the IDW forums. If you want to see the storyboards published in some way you can go to the IDW forums and show your support there. If it's more than just a handful of fans, including myself, that want to see them published in some way then maybe IDW would consider it.

Man, I can't get enough of the movie storyboards! I remember seeing that a few years ago (maybe even a decade) there was someone selling photocopied copies of the whole thing, which is my holy grail. Reckon there'd be a market for releasing it? Maybe a project for Jim Sorenson?

Oh, just a heads-up. The Star Wars-esque opening credit scroll, ending narration, and censored dialog was in the original UK theatrical release. The film was modified so that the movie could get a "U" rating (similar to a "G" rating in the US). They probably did this in hopes that the movie would last more than three weeks in the theaters.
The extra footage on the Australian bluray was originally sourced from a professional videotape transfer of the UK print. The tag at the beginning of the the videotape is dated 12/3/1986, which was a few days prior to the theatrical release in the UK.

As bad as some of these deaths were, the deaths described in Ron Friedman's rough drafts were more graphic. Stuff like Autobots getting torn apart in mid air then their parts raining down on comrades, or Ironhide and Ratchet getting fused together.
I have no definitive in-head canon, but in my mind one of two things happened:
1. They were killed in the 20 year gap between S2 and the Movie. The Decepticons couldn't have taken over Cybertron without some fatalities involved.
2. Its a big galaxy and they're off doing other stuff, whether it be on Cybertron, Earth, or some other planet. After all, we don't see Cosmos til much later in S3.
I don't remember what toys besides the movie/season 3 'formers were on the shelves at the time, but by Hasbro logic if they weren't on the shelves, they could be toast.
Insane Galvatron
Yes he has. It's on the Sony version of the movie. It's an easter egg in the "pop up video" version of the movie. You have hit "enter" when that scene comes up. They do a slideshow of the storyboard images with the audio from the movie overlaid.
