Last week at Hascon 2017, TFW2005 had the chance to interview two of the leading forces in the Transformers brand right now – Product Design Manager John Warden and Marketing Director Ben Montano. Amidst all the chaos this last week at San Diego Comic Con 2017, TFW2005 met up with Hasbro Designers John Warden and Lenny Panzica for a short interview about what was just revealed, the future of the Generations line, the current movie line, and Robots in Disguise as a whole, and a few specific queries regarding design choices! As a part of our celebration of the Transformers Movie series hitting its tenth anniversary, and Transformers The Last Knight launching, we set out to complement our previous two articles with a list of the top five heroes and villains of the Transformers Movie franchise. Seems easy enough, right? Pick five awesome Autobots and the five coolest villains.

Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans.

In place of that planned article, we’ve written this piece recording my experiences trying to put together a list of the top characters, and what it means about the characterization of the Transformers in the live action movie series.

June 28, 2007, Rhode Island. Botcon 2007 was kicking off, and fans eagerly filled auditoriums at the Providence Place Mall’s multiplex theatre. This was the moment. After close to two years of leaks, advance information, and trailers, this gathering of fans would get to experience Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg’s vision of the Transformers in live action.

The lights dimmed. The presentation began.

Cue Peter Cullen.

Before time began, there was the Cube. We know not where it comes from, only that it holds the power to create worlds and fill them with life. That is how our race was born. For a time, we lived in harmony. But like all great power, some wanted it for good, others for evil. And so began the war.

The audience erupted into cheers and applause. The original voice of Optimus Prime was back, and with it, the Transformers franchise, reinvented and reborn for the big screen.

(Of course, to fans, the brand had never gone away. It had continued near unbroken for over 20 years. But in the public consciousness, Transformers had gone away around 1986, and was now returning in force.)

It has been ten years since that initial fan premiere event, but the memory of that event, and what made that first movie so special, still burns bright in me.

TFW2005 member GirlBot brings us news of a wide-ranging Hollywood Reporter interview with Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner, wherein he discusses movies, toys and of course the bottom line: revenue. Among several Transformers-related highlights:

In 2002, Brian Goldner, a then-rising executive at Hasbro, was pitching studios the robot-morphing Transformers toys as the next Spider-Man, which had just ushered in the new tentpole movie era. One day, while having lunch in L.A., he ran into Spider-Man producer Avi Arad. “He told me that I shouldn’t embarrass myself because it was going to be impossible to execute,” recalls Goldner, who has been CEO since 2008. He kept pushing, though, and two years later, DreamWorks and Paramount bought film rights to the megafranchise, whose four films have grossed $3.8 billion worldwide. A fifth chapter, and the final one directed by Michael Bay, opens June 21.

 

You’ve got an Oscar-nominated director, Travis Knight, tackling the Bumblebee spinoff. Does that mean a greater emphasis on story?

We’ve always loved Bumblebee. He is one of the favorite characters in our research globally. We have a great story.  We have a lead [human] character who’s a girl [Hailee Steinfeld]. It’s set back several decades ago, a really fun era.

And so, 2016 has drawn to a close and 2017 has dawned. While many revile 2016 for reasons outside of the fandom, within the Transformers fandom there has been a lot of things to get excited about, including big developments in the comics, a very big development in the toys, Michael Bay upsetting people before the new movie even comes out, and not one, not two, but three cartoons for fans to enjoy.

It’s August 8th, 2016 – and that means it is time to say Happy Anniversary to the original that started it all – Transformers The Movie was released on this date 30 years ago. A cornerstone of the animated Transformers canon, the movie brought to the wider imagination some elements that had been in play in the comics for a little while, like the Matrix, along with introducing some other elements which went on to shape the franchise for years to come, such as Unicron.

It’s also been 30 years since children everywhere were reduced to tears by their favorite character, Optimus Prime, dying on screen – along with many other shockingly graphic ends to characters from the early years.

Join us on this retrospective of the key elements of Transformers the Movie – and its enduring legacy which has shaped many of the series which have followed it.

It’s April 22nd, 1996. You’ve just tuned in to a new cartoon, and after a brief opening credits showcasing the characters – all to a rocking theme song – you witness two spacecraft in battle above a planet. After both take damage, both ships crash on to the planet – and a new adventure begins.

It sounds like it could be the opening to the original Transformers cartoon, but what you just witnessed was the dawn of a new era of Transformers, and the franchise’s first true reimagining and reboot. Gone were the jet planes, sports cars, and tanks – this was a different era. An era of robots who turned into birds, mammals, and dinosaurs. This was the dawn of the Beast Era – the Beast Wars!
