Continuing the behind the scenes looks tonight, Hasbro Transformers designer Sam Smith has now taken to his own Instagram to share some details on the newly-revealed Studio Series Bumblebee Movie Concept Megatron!
“SS-109 Bumblebee Movie Concept Megatron
I am ecstatic to finally be able to share our Leader Scale Concept Megatron. We officially came across this oddity while sifting through the CAD files from the Bumblebee movie, and discovered a wonderful unused design for Megatron. Originally the story was going utilize Megatron being frozen in ice, to help bridge the continuity gap to the Bayverse films, but the scene was eventually dropped, and this design disappeared. Luckily for us, we thawed it out and I was thrilled to be part of the team to help bring this figure to life.
We got to work on a vehicle design for Megatron. Like the majority of the BB Cybertronian alt modes, we wanted to utilize details that were present on the bot form, but still prioritize maintaining the look that they had on screen without sacrificing them for fantasy alt modes. This strategy has had some mixed success, but each new figure feels like a welcome addition to the line. Knowing that theatrical Megatron arrived on earth as a cybetronian jet, and later a tank in the first two Bayverse films, I was split between what alt form was most appropriate, but aiming for a tripleformer seemed most appropriate. I enlisted @santalux75 to conceptualize some vehicle looks for each of the modes, which we were able to take inspiration from for the final design.
I was able to partner with Yuya Onishi at Takara, who worked his magic to deliver a truly uncompromised robot mode from what ever direction you look at it. The articulation for this figure is unmatched by any other Transformer that I’ve had the opportunity to work on you can see the love that went into making this definitive version of Megatron.
Megatron’s fusion cannon can be folded and stowed on the figures back, and can be positioned in a couple of different orientations between the two vehicle modes. The figure is packed full of a heritage deco scheme that was pulled directly from the concept art.”

Where are people seeing the Japanese box? I haven't found it anywhere.

Yk what? I'm gonna get this guy and give him Primal's chain along with Battletrap's mace just to see how a live action G1 megatron would look.

And the box is sealed! Great box cover art!

Man, Takara always knocks it out of the park with their pics. I kept going back and forth on this guy for a while before I decided to pass on him (since I’m trying to avoid movie stuff to save cash next year), but these shots might make me reconsider.

I will say this. Silver paint and articulated hands makes this Megatron worth the asking price.
Movie Convoy
From the pictures, you can see that Megatron has finger articulation.
Ravewind
Yeah, arms and legs have an over 90 degree bend but I'm curious if he has a butterfly joint.
Poe Ghostal
Can't wait for in-hand pics of this guy…very curious about the extent of the articulation. It'd be great if he had BB ROTB SS Optimus-level articulation, but he doesn't quite look like he does.

yes thank you

Fair enough, guess I just really love that jet mode the leader has. It shows what a proper Cybertronian jet can be instead of whatever this guy has. I also appreciated them using the cockpit as a weapon even if it wasn’t accurate, something satisfying about sections of the vehicle being used.
I really need to get that voyager at some point, it seems like a really good figure. Just so much other things to buy nowadays.

Any time I run to the store for anything it's a $50 bill, even if it's half a grocery bag's worth of stuff. It's insane.
Rob
Oh it's freaking ridiculous!
Ravewind
Unfortunately everything is expensive these days and fuel costs only exaserbate everything. I just got out of the store and paper plates, tums, potato chips and 3 cases of soda wrung up a $52 bill. That's insane no matter how you cut it.
Rob
So I can't comment on the movie line because I didn't start buying them until the BBM. before that I bought the ROTF Optimus. Keep in mind at this point I already thought the Bay movies weren't for me, but I thought the leader was so good looking it was worth it.
I think what makes it worse is that the figures engineering today are great! They just should all be about 10% bigger. When they were Siege prices you could over look it ($20 $30, and $50), but now? it's a tough pill to swallow.

Yeah I agree with DOTM leaders being the last true leaders, even if I've gotten enjoyment out of the current leaders. But personally TLK Megs just felt very clunky to me, and mine broke multiples times. I also just think the voyager was vastly superior. Like if they figured out how to put the leader's face gimmick onto the voyager, that would be the best TLK Megatron figure.
octobotimus
As much as I like all of those, no they were no really worth a full $55. Fun toys with a lot going on, but not quite $55 to me. I will say though they are way more Leader class worthy than what we are getting now.
Tbh I should specify that I meant to say DOTM, TLK megs was just the last leader I bought full price and thought it was worth full price. I do agree though by TLK Leaders had already gotten significantly worse.
