Tangential. Sometimes, USA localized compilation are more advantageous. But if you are HardCore Otaku, those added special stuff are to d!e for. Of course, it depends on the budget. I have recently been going on a TF G1 JP binge and managed to collect 2nd hand BDs of G1 S#1 toS#3, MF,TFV and Zone. Spread out in 5 years! Also have Shout! and Rhino(incomplete). Dopamine high you know.

From what I recall, it's not just to counter scalpers in relation to Gundam kits, but also because of things like Japanese buyers discovering it was actually cheaper to buy some things overseas. The one I heard about previously was DVDs. Something like how in Japan the complete Ultraseven DVD series would be a large box set with multiple DVDs each with their own case, while the overseas versions was just one case with multiple DVDs inside, making it much cheaper. So as a result, the overseas version can't be shipped within Japan so Japanese buyers have to get the box set. I've seen that in person: I have the complete DVD set of Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs (all contained within a single standard-sized DVD case), while the Sei Juushi Bismark series I had to get two rather pricey box sets (part 1 and part 2).
I personally think just Japanese companies don't see the value of making certain stuff available overseas if it's supposed to be exclusive.
