oh, ok. I guess my past experience with it was just particularly bad (it ruined the entire figure and forced me to buy a new copy)

I don't tend to refer to it as "unpaintable plastic" myself, as I find it something of a misnomer as for supposedly being "unpaintable" I've had a lot of success thus far painting such components with water based acrylic model paints. I've only found them unpaintable due to structural placement, when they just don't have the clearance on heavy use joints so they instantly rub/wear.
Dyemore Royal Purple, as it's for synthetic fabrics Dyemore seems to work best on plastics, at least if, like me, you don't really have the Space/Time/Inclination to mess with dye + acetone.
One might get a bit less grape-y result hitting them up with some sapphire blue first but it's so easy to go too dark with dye that I'm happy with them being in the purple range, even if they aren't the same tone, and nothing is certain when dyeing coloured plastic (or even "uncoloured" – before the release of the official one in Siege, my first attempt at making a POTP Greenlight her easily dyeable white parts went a dark teal towards the blue side when I tried to green them with Peacock Green) because the base colour can have an unexpected tone/hue shift effect!
mikeszekely
What brand and color did you use? I see Rit has purple, eggplant, violet, and hyacinth in their regular all-purpose dyes, and royal purple in their DyeMore line.
Optimum Lime
Damn, that looks sweet! That really improves the look of those guys lol. I guess if you’re able to dye the hands for shrapnel, and they’re the same color as the biceps on bombshell, then they would most likely be unpaintable/dyeable plastic as well
Optimum Lime
Yep I see that now
flik68
Lots of people have done this. It's all in this thread.
Seeaich
My Shrapnel had a minor chip on one thigh I had to repaint and it was purple plastic IIRC.
I didn't want to bother with dyeing so I just painted my Bombshell's biceps black, they seem fine apart from elbow wear that I then blended out with black permanent marker.

I *DID* dye Shrapnel's new grey mitts though!

Optimum Lime
lol, that’s ironic! Do you know if the biceps are made of unpaintable plastic? You can tell because they’ll glow a weird color under us light. If they are, then you/me could really easily just dye the piece black to make it the right color. And one more question, what color is the plastic of the thighs underneath the silver paint on both bombshell and shrapnel? I’m pretty sure bombshell has black plastic, but I have no idea about shrapnel
Optimum Lime
Thanks! I’ll for sure be tracking down a shrapnel to do so with lol
Seeaich
Yes, it's a pretty easy pop off the thighs at the mushroom pegs, unscrew the groins and swap.

You can also swap the fists, it's only a shame that the pinning of the elbows means the bicep swap is a high risk mod that I didn't want to risk!
The opaque area of the chest is light grey plastic painted purple, I removed the paint from the slot for the beetle mode "helmet" as it was too tight on my copy, and I didn't want to scrape the silver off it's projecting tab. The visible silver is a paint app on the back of clear amber segment.
If you strip the purple paint off a Legacy Bombshell you'll get a pretty much 'Toon accurate robot mode with a grey chest.
DrOblivian
Purple is painted. unsure of the color of the plastic underneath. pretty sure its silver though.
I have swapped the hips on my shrapnel bombshells. highly recommend doing it, i think it makes both figures look better, not just bombshell.
its also easy enough to do so if you don't like it, just swap it back.
Optimum Lime
Can anybody confirm if the chest on bombshell is painted purple or if it\'s made of purple plastic? Also I know the thighs are painted, but what color are they underneath the paint? If they\'re just the bare silver plastic then I might strip the paint off them when I get him. One more thing, has anybody tried to switch the hips on bombshell and shrapnel to give bombshell his trademark silver shorts?
RangerXML
Skywasp can be used as Parasite from the Waruders, add him to the group!
Enemy
I'm sorry, but from the angle and the shadows, Bombshell just looks depressed. He probably just figured out he's a cheap retool.
Thundershot
It’s not clean but I’ve got all of the released Insecticons in front of me.

Jalen Gatton07
Any clean pictures of all 3 together?
AtomicGarden
I don’t know. I don’t think anyone tried to research which batch numbers were affected (like there was a Motormaster thread). By the looks of it, the first batch of Shrapnel were fine and later on we started to see the yellowed ones and then Shrapnel went M.I.A
Neko-bot77
I preordered mine from Pulse immediately when it went up. I have no yellowing whatsoever. Not sure how this factors into figuring out affected batches or whatnot.
AtomicGarden
The more I see of those yellowed Shrapnel, the more I’m 100% convinced they stopped production at some point when they noticed something was wrong. That’s why he’s so hard to find and why most stores still haven’t received their preorders yet, while they got the rest of the wave. Some of them claim they won’t receive Shrapnel until November at best.
Neko-bot77
Nope, despite them being teased in the Evolution box art.
I assume they will show up eventually. They can be done more or less as retools of the main 3 bugs. Hell, if even Bombshell is a retool, why not do the rest of the bugs?
