Amazon Japan has him for even cheaper shipped. Probably around $118 including shipping. Edit: If you are in the US.

They use less paint because people complained about chipping. Even then for the most part its internal parts that dont get painted with some exceptions.
Teletran-1
They used to match FT on paint though! Seems like they've been using less and less paint since MP44's peak

Takara stuff is never going to weigh as much as FTs, that's pretty much FT schtick heft and a good paint job. Takara simply doesn't see it as a priority outside of weight distribution and structural enforcement. They're not against diecast see Missing Links Prime, its just not as important to them in the MP line.

I have to go and check my collection, which until now it's balanced between FT and TT, with just a couple of KO's from TT models (Bumblebee 2.0 and MP44), but if I'm not mistaken, the last official TT's I got were the recent MP52 seeker trio, and I'm pretty pleased with then. Some people complained that they lack ratchets, and some joints were on the loose side (especially Starscream), the lack of a waist swivel which I couldn't care less on these specific characters, and the fake chest.
I had none of those issues, or complaints about them, as they all are pretty good until now, not as hefty as a FT, but they look and feel good, not hollow and don't feel as light as Hoist does.

This person gets it! Great post!
Also 3P companies tend to add excessive die cast parts all over the figure to increase the heft and perceived quality. But for me there should only be die cast in the feet for stability if the figure needs it.
The MP-52 seekers have a lot of die cast in the chest and waist and it just makes them top heavy and more at risk for paint chipping. But 3P fans would most likely love the heft.

Also I don’t want to ignite any 3P vs TT nonsense.
I for one think that 3P companies actually MADE Takara up their game. And now 3Ps try to keep pace with TT in turn.
A healthy dose of competition never hurt anyone

I totally get where you’re coming from & I agree to the lighter, less sophisticated, less “worthy” feel.
But you need to understand that with figures like Hoist a LOT of mass shifting occurs during transformation. I agree that once you pull out the legs with the arms tucked away the rest feels a bit … like a shell. Far away from sturdy, ultra compact figures like Sunstreaker, even further away from MP10 and a country mile away from ultra hefty semi die-cast bots like MP1.
But again — being in scale with both alt mode that usually dictates a max size so that all car bots fit in Prime’s trailer while also keeping in line with the ubiquitous scale chart of a very simplified 80s kids cartoon show is an almost impossible feat on its own.
Yet Takara pull it off. Time & time again. I don’t know why but I stopped buying 3P as Takara just knock it out of the park with every new MP. I think they upped their game A LOT with going full toon (with the obvious side effect of letting down many toy/hybrid MP enthusiasts in the process) but having realistic alt mode vehicles & planes turning into slick & simplified toon characters that just OOZE CHARACTER is absolute whichcraft to me.
I mean look at Hound, Trailbreaker, Grapple, Hoist — I can literally hear them talk
In a nutshell: small car turning into blocky big bot = less sturdy, more hollow. Out of pure necessity.

A lot of the newer ones feel insubstantial to me. I realize quality isn’t determined by “heft”, but they don’t feel worth their prices to me. Or, maybe it’s just my anti-toon bias influencing my perception.

I mean… if he looks exactly how you want him to look, I don't see the problem.
Also, he's hollow because it's where all his robot parts go when in alternate form.

I haven't bought an MP since maybe since Sunstreaker? I went ahead and got Hoist though since none of the 3P ones seemed quite right in appearance. When it showed up and I got it transformed and it looks just how I wanted, however….
Are all the newer MP's this light and hollow feeling? I know his chest is hollow but it feels in hand sorta like a cheap figure (and I don't mean the price). As I said, I have a bunch up to Sunstreaker and they all had this quality feel to them. Hoist just feels like it's…not. No ratchets, thin plastic feeling. It was honestly a lil of a disappointment. He looks great on the shelf but I didn't know if all the MP's had shifted to this style of manufacturing or if it's just this guy.
MoonchildVic
Yeah, shoulders were also my biggest challenge with this guy, but the overall process is quite straight forward and intuitive. A couple of days after the first transformation, I've gave it a try converting him to Truck mode, and back to bot mode without help of the instructions (or videos) and I was pretty much successful.
AstroTrainee
Haha brilliant Salzburg is only 1h away. Fun fact: Hardly any Austrian knows the movie
Back on topic: How did you guys find the transformation? I thought mo(i)st of it to be quite straightforward, but struggled with the shoulders as well as the doors/middle section. Bit anxious to break sth. like the little hinges at the doors. Usually don’t have that feeling but damn these transformations sure are not getting easier/less fiddly.
My Masterpiece moment was untucking the hands/arms from inside the feet/legs Quite the engineering … TT just knock it out of the park with their latest MPs … but bit silent on the announcing front lateley COME ON TAKARA
AstroTrainee
Yes, it’s real. Mr. Moist settled down in Tyrol in the heart of the Austrian Alps after his illustrious acting career … Sometimes you see deer grazing on that grass hill.
Told him not to build any Con-attracting towers though which is prob. why he claimed the Decepticat’s one in the shot above
