Hugo Weaving as Megatron could have been incredible if they had given him more to work with than slobbering growls and cliche evil one-liners. Imagine if they had him do something akin to his Agent Smith persona and wrote Megatron as the cold, calculated evil that he should be

That's exactly what I mean: I think if he had better material and room to make it his own he could have really given a distinct 'flavor' to his portrayal.

Bringing back Peter Cullen to voice Prime was one of the few good decisions that the films ever made… and yet the material he's given always undersells it and treats it as nothing more than a cheap parlor trick in order to dupe fans into thinking the people making these movies gave a modicum of a shit.

The thing that really does me in is that, he's such a cool guy that he'd probably reminisce fondly about his time on these films even as they bastardized and made a mockery of his character. I'm positive he was treated like the legend he was while working on these films and I'm not trying to imply that he was mistreated, I'm saying the movies have repeatedly failed to let him embody the spirit of Optimus as a character, the closest we get are brief glimpses… and constantly failing to take his input into account.

I struggle to be 'happy' that Cullen was brought in when all I'm expecting is for the guy to be given ass material, and he's too nice to make an issue of it.

I feel the same way about the last two cinematic Supermen. Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill seemed like they could have been great, but one was stuck in Singer's Donner Fanfic movie and the other well thank goodness that era is over. Pity it took a decade.

After hearing about the Screenplay leak of ROTB, I'm really scared and somewhat annoyed. The Live action Transformers films are extremely inconsistent, I feel Bumblebee could've given us a brand new direction and start to a rebooted Transformers universe, but yet here we are with them completely changing the designs of characters such as Wheeljack and possibly taking cues from Bay's shitty humor. Transformers needs a good movie series that doesn't rely on this crap and tries to tie itself to the bayverse.

And that is precisely why it was a bad move bringing him back. Movie Optimus isn't the same guy as G1 Optimus by any stretch and if they had gotten someone else to play the character then maybe we wouldn't have gotten stuck with people endlessly trying to emulate his voice for the toons.

Yeah honestly, with the power of hindsight as much as I dislike Lorenzo for being a slimy fuck I think if they did get Liam Neeson to just voice Prime it'd be so much easier to just divorce him from the character he's 'meant' to be aping.

The sad part is I think Neeson could be a great Optimus, but no matter how great the actor if the material he's given to work with sucks then there's not much that can be done to salvage it. Hugo Weaving himself is an immensely talented actor and yet there's nothing really all that memorable about his time as Megatron.
