Short version, way back in the day (like the 20s-40s) they were used to promote films (often as photographs/sets of photographs, hence the smaller size), and fell out of favor compared to the big movie posters we think of today. They still come up now and then as a sort of quaint way to promote a movie (or in this case, sell art based on a movie).
Some people prefer them because they're smaller (and thus easier to store/collect) or take a bit of a different stylistic take on what they show from a movie.

My signed copies are now live on my store… theartofmattferguson.com

Love that artwork. Hate that I missed it. I would've preferred they were limited to 1986 vs 186.
Roadbuster25
I do like that point.
THE-TRANSFORMER
I picked this up last week. I couldn't not.
That said, I would have really loved this if it was just the image without title and credits.
Unfortunately with the title overlapping I can't crop and frame

I have got some signed copies hitting my store this Friday – theartofmattferguson.com
So these are A3, so a nice easy to frame poster size.

Weird this made news today. This was available last week the same time the TFTM Posters went up for sale.
Missed out on a news credit opportunity.

Gee Won 1984
Never heard of it. Is it a trading card size? tiny?
Arco2002
While it’s not exactly lobby card size it’s in the ball park. I wanted it to be easy to frame.
lobby cards were given away… in the lobby of cinemas to help promote films. It’s not that complicated, just a fun throwback.

I appreciate your restraint after my admittedly dick move while half-awake this early in this morning.
PadForce
Yeah, I just dont see the point of it at that size. Nothing to differentiate it from a poster so what is the point.
You are a cool person.
Roadbuster25
I am with you. Never heard the term before now but it's obviously a promotional artwork. But shouldn't it be bigger if it's a promotional artwork?
Spikeytigertron
An interesting wall piece… and I guess I'd understand that 1,986 would be too many… but then maybe they should have just gone with x/86 instead?
Fair point. Perhaps it's appealing to the sci-fi senses with celestial bodies… but at that scale anything else would be a gnat in comparison.

I honestly thought a lobby card when I read the title was this:

which confused me given the price was so low. But no, the pic I posted is what's called a standee.
The lobby cards are the posters you see framed behind glass in the theater.

Would appreciate if someone could explain what a "Lobby Card" is?
Is this effectively a poster?
Oniconvoy
I suppose I understand the intended composition, but making one of the largest Transformers in existence a tiny, insignificant speck still seems a bit of an odd choice.

Damn, that's beautiful.
