Legacy Voyager Beast Wars Inferno Behind the Scenes

Hasbro designer Mark Maher has once again taken to his Instagram page with another behind the scenes breakdown of an upcoming Transformers figure. This time he’s taking a look at the much-anticipated Legacy Voyager Beast Wars Inferno!

This fireant predacon is going to further complete your collection of Kingdoms (Beast Wars)Megatron’s army. I had the great pleasure of working with Takara Tomy’s amazingly talented Tomo san on this item. He really did an awesome job with this guy and I couldn’t be happier for the finished product.

Firstly, here is the concept art I did to kickoff this maniac, I did this off memory and I soon realized it was time to dip back into some episodes for further detailed reference.

I also had the opportunity to get a zbrush sculpt from our great designer Doug Schultheis. Doug’s one of those secret Hasbro renaissance dudes who is responsible for so many successful products, it was great to have him sculpt this up for reference in tackling the Kingdom aesthetic for the fireant alt mode. Which was obviously very challenging to get all that bot in a slim fireant body, but I do believe Tomo san’s transformation will excite and satisfy your hungry hands.

We ended up being able to merge his rocket booster into his energon infused flame thrower weapon, while keeping some serious blast effect compatibility for some ultimate play action. As I mentioned in the livestream his back shell does propel spin around to give him the ultimate accuracy to his animation apperance.

The articulation in the jaw just gives you such an incredible range of pose outs and play function, you will also notice his eyes and his mouth has the light pipe feature to really give this guy his red tinted evil energon glow. Once you start yelling quotes from the show as you articulate his jaw, you will really have a hard time putting this figure down.

Also to note the package illustration for this heart throb will surely be saved as it came out so sweet!

Just saw him at Target next to Legacy Armada Starscream. Didn’t pick him up This time. Right after Christmas, y’know.

I absolutely love the beast mode. It’s just so deeply satisfying to have him stand so tall and not collapse under his own weight like the original. Fantastic detail and the eyes are just so wonderful expressive.

Bot mode is certainly elevated by the fantastic head sculpt and it’s great to see that fourth hidden butt flap. I know some are put off by the faux legs, but they push all the right nostalgia buttons for me.

One of the greatest shelfwarmers of Beast Wars getting redone and then remolded into one of the other greatest shelfwarmer of Beast Wars would be incredible. But as someone who unironically loved Transquito as a kid, that would be a day 1 preorder.

On a serious note, Inferno in hand is great. The beast head transforms in such a way that there's no visible bot parts from top or bottom, and the ant legs are super stable. On top of that, the ant-butt pegs together around the legs, which also peg together. The whole thing is *super* stable.

Also, for any JP BW fans or even JP-curious….this guy could totally pull off a great Transquito/BigMos.

I don't think it's even that. It seems like the peg/hole is still there of anyone was brave enough to try busting it apart.

What annoys me about that isn't the inaccuracy, but the fact you can tell at some point the tail was planned to come off his forearm and serve as an accessory with a 5mm port and then….possibly for stability reasons? They ditched it.

Yea, that always bugged me as well

I don't know if it holds up to Legacy, but iirc we were told by Takara and Hasbro that the directive of the WFC Trilogy was that characters would all try to have the same standard of articulation and that they would attempt to keep a sense of scale that feels right (see: Ironhide trying to be as tall as possible to that he can be a tall character despite being a Deluxe even while compared to Voyagers, etc) and also base the characters on the media instead of redesigning them outright like previous Classics would sometimes try to do (ironically, the old classics of Waspinator, Rattrap and Rhinox were some that did not try to redesign those characters).

Specific to Kingdom, Hasbro said that to make the Beast Wars toys match the high molded detail of the Vehicle characters they wanted them to have lots of sculpted detail and beast modes that were more accurate to the real life animals instead of being accurate to the original toys or cartoon.

Again, no idea if any of that still holds true, but I presume it does since Tarantulas' beast mode is clearly trying to look like a real Tarantula instead of matching the old toy/show designs.

Ah right I remember this. Their goal was to provide character updates that are updates in robot mode but more real world accurate accurate beast mode ( accurate to real animals not the show while the robot mode are fairly accurate to the show)
