Coming to us via Wotafa on YouTube we have our first in-hand images the highly anticipated Transformers Masterpiece MP-57 Skyfire.
We have great images and clear shots of this impressive cartoon-accurate rendition of G1 Skyfire as well as some of his gimmicks and additional parts. For those wondering about scale, we have great group shots next to several other Masterpiece figures. We have some interesting highlights to mention:
- 35 cm tall in robot mode.
- 41 cm long in alt mode
- 42 cm wingspan
- Optimus, Jazz and Wheeljack mini-figures have got basic shoulder, elbow, leg and knee articulation.
- 2 configurations in alt mode one of them as a slight homage to the G1 Jetfire toy.
- Covers for each landing gear.
- Transformation is quite simple but intuitive and original.
- Articulation is quite impressive. The figure can do a high kick and a fully bend knee easily.
See all the images after the break, as well as Wotafa’s video review, and then join to the ongoing discussion on the 2005 Boards! Don’t forget that you can find pre-orders for Skyfire via our sponsors links below.

Oh yes. And I'm currently doing a group order, so let me know if interested. They are $30 for a set of 4, before shipping. View attachment 30290717 View attachment 30290719 View attachment 30290720 View attachment 30290721 View attachment 30290722 View attachment 30290723

So out of curiosity, has anyone tinkered with making new faces for this guy? I'd love an angry face, maybe a shouting face? It would probably have to be SLA, but I know we have plenty of tinkerers here…

Ahh ok then. I thought I was hallucinating the thing since I saw it late last night.

Yeah it was a one day sale I happened to run into yesterday. I grabbed it for 211 substandard.

BBTS has daily sales and he was part of yesterday's sale. You can still see the marketing for it on their Facebook page.
mechman22
I wonder if someone was able to pick him up at the reduced price before the price change today.
Could it have been a mistake on BBTS part because it’s odd they would discount a Takara exclusive?
mechman22
Not sure if anyone saw, but he’s on sale at BBTS for $215
Edit: oh no. Just checked again and it’s back to regular price. Wasn’t a false alarm, just must have ended yesterday night. Sorry

I just throw a cloth over the part . Keeps all my mess contained ….. aannnn you can take that however you may

Well I don’t gut them! That’s gross! Haha
I cut them using wire cutters. And you need to wear safety glasses or at least look away or close your eyes because when it cuts the little spring piece you cut off will go flying like a missile!
Having said that I’m not sure how thick these springs are. I’ve cut Trypticon and DX9 Gabriel springs with wire cutters so I assume they would work on Skyfire springs.

Not sure
I didn’t want to snip them in case I decided to somehow use them later. I swapped 1 out using a weaker spring I found in a $5 box of assorted springs I bought at a hardware store.

If you don't have Tin Snips (which I recommend everyone have a pair on hand, because they do come in handy for situations such as these), you can use an old pair of nail clippers you don't care about. It'll take a bunch of presses, but it will eventually cut through. (Make sure they're the toenail size, the regulars aren't big enough.)

I want to know what you guys use to cut thick springs like this.

You don’t need to cut the spring in half. I’ve fixed transformer joints in the last like my son’s titan Trypticon by just cutting one coil from the end of the spring. Sometimes that’s all it takes. But it sounds like in this case cutting more of the spring may be better.
I haven’t taken mine apart yet to have a good look. He’s standing on the shelf just fine so it’s not a rush. But I keep thinking about cutting some coils off the forward/back ankle ratchet spring to see if it still works as a joint and puts way less stress on that pin.
Does anyone have a size handy for the scre you would replace the pin with? There are screws specially made for self-tapping into plastic parts. The threads are not fully circular but are actually triangular when looking at the tip of the screw. Normally those screws are what is used in factories assembling plastic parts for consumer electronics etc. I’m wondering if you actually need that type of screw or will a regular wood or sheet metal screw work?

The spring is too long/strong and/or the pin sucks at holding the spring in. The only way I got it to fix was to cut the spring in half (I probably cut it a little too much, 2/3 probably would work) and it’s back together without it popping out constantly. The ratcheting is a little softer than the other foot but it’s not detrimental in any way that I saw/noticed
TFXProtector
That wasn't necessary. Don't be a dick to people for internet clout and your five likes. What a shitty thing to do.
The seller didn't clarify. The images show it loose, complete and he called it a Takara-Tomy MP. It's a private seller. (He might not have known, himself, because he most likely received it loose.)
So, I came to ask and got the info I needed. There was ZERO need for your response. Be better, be decent.

So, was the pin too long or was it the spring that was too long?

So I had this issue. I figured out what it was. The pin on his foot it’s fully squeezed into the ratchet joint I had to use pliers (after taking the foot apart and looking at both) to try to squeeze it in place. Issue is that it doesn’t stay in place. So I am gonna guess there’s no permanent fix other than replacing the whole ankle.
I cut the spring in half (maybe just a little too much) and put it back together with the push pin and it’s fine now. Super annoying but now it’s flat like it should be

It’s the spring pushing the joint out. You’ll be able to tell once the ratchets there stop clicking.
I think Junkmech’s guide was for taking it apart if you wanted to do preemptive maintenance. Especially since the vertical foot ratchet directly above the ankle exacerbates the ankle ratchet issue due to being very tight between clicks(easier to see in person than explain, you’ll notice the issue when posing the foot). Basically when moving the foot vertically at the joint above the foot, you can feel the foot being pushed away from the horizontal ankle tilt(like I said, easier to see in person than it is for me to explain. Best to rotate the foot vertically by pushing under the middle of the foot rather than trying to pivot it at beneath the front part of the foot).
For the foot that got pushed out far enough for the ankle ratchet to stop working, I pulled the foot off and swapped out the spring for a weaker spring. The ratchet now works but it softly clicks when the ankle tilts so it’s not as stable as before.
I wasn’t so sure the stock spring being cut could mitigate the issue because from what I read, in some cases cutting a spring in half can double its strength.
The core issue is the strength of the spring; it’s too strong. You can barely compress it between your thumb and index finger. Not helped that it’s secured by a friction pin instead of a screw. Yes due to its sheer size and weight, MP Skyfire needs ratchets preferably with springs. Not springs this strong though.
