Transformers War for Cybertron Trilogy : Kingdom is about to drop on Netflix in just about a week, July 29th worldwide. This is the wrap up to the War for Cybetron Trilogy, the finale to Siege and Earthrise. The Autobots and Decepticons will cross paths with the Maximals and Predacons right in the middle of the Beast Wars, and things will never be the same!
TFW2005 was able to check out the entire series a bit early thanks to the Netflix and Hasbro PR teams. Read on to check out our thoughts, there may be some minor spoilers but we will keep all the major stuff out so you can enjoy the series yourselves!
Round 3 go! I am going to save overall thoughts until the end this time. You can hop down the page to that here.
The below items are somewhat spoilery, but not full spoilers. If you want to wet the beak a bit, I hint at things below. BUT, everyone has their own red line and mine may be different so proceed at your own risk!
There are still some spoilery things below so if you don’t want to go there, STOP NOW!
Starts off with a nice throw back to G1 Ep 1.
The Galvatron / Megatron angle picks right back up here. New but familiar.
Chaos Bringer, looks good.
Boom – we are in new territory. Beasts. Based on whats happening here, it’s not the BW continuity we know from old show. But some alt verse version of that, which is now also interrupted by the G1 guys landing here. So, let’s just go with it…
Beast voices. VERY odd hearing them differently. Almost more so than the G1 guys. Todaro as Starscream – still legit. That Soundwave, makes me cry.
Beast Megs, oh nooooo. Big changes here on all fronts.
Beast characterizations, other than Megatron, seem to be similar to their OG counterparts.
Sizing – not going with the size difference from original show. Beasts are same size(s) as G1 bots. Megatron(s) are eye to eye, roughly relative from there, etc.
Flashback, showing the Beast crew leaving Cybertron. Shadowed out. Again, slight differences from existing lore.
All the best toys, lol.
Dinobot’s voice actor is good, kinda fits the character, but still weird hearing him differently. Needs a little more grr, little more animal vibe.
Nice little hug there, good throwback.
Ep gets everyone mixed up and plays in the new normal pretty well. By end you are kinda just rolling here, now.
Intro shows Allspark arriving on Earth. Seemed to be a space bridge in Earth’s area already, so that’s a thing. How deep that was thought about beyond getting it on Earth in this scene who knows.
The pink one, lol.
On the hunt for Allspark, bots start hallucinating. This was a good way to get some fun in there.
Dinobot has similar story points going on here. I have a feeling I know where this is going…
Yeah Ravage – tape bots getting some good play.
OK, Soundwave fight is cool. Down with that. Wait, sonofa…
The remix of how things go down is not bad. Once you accept both lores were different to start, watching the merging is cool.
I have to say, aside from story and voices – the Beasts, especially in robot mode, do look good. Slight style changes, but I could roll with it if a full new series was done.
Lots of new stuff floating here, I’m good with it, within this little pocket of the Transformers Multiverse that is.
Ha, speaking of Multiverse.
Little twist here, not expecting that. But that quick, right back to “normal”. I think that could have worked if spread out over a couple eps.
Again, new territory, digging the remixing of key points here for what it is.
The future is already here. I think they were trying to say something hehe.
So the Beasts are from a future where they know, fear, and blame Galvatron et al. Interesting.
OOOOH Ravage. Cheetor.
Lots of good fighting going on here.
Nice line by Megatron there, tank mode!
Oh snap. Big guy on the scene.
More new territory.
The final episode. Leaving a lot out here on purpose.
The remix here with Prime, Megatron, their counterparts, good.
Once we move out of trying to service old lore and move into some good new stuff on it’s own, I found myself way more into things here.
Ha, watch through the end end. Good stuff.
So here we are, end of the Trilogy. How I’m feeling so far, right after Kingdom…
I found the first three episodes a bit forced and jarring. The new voices for the beasts, the major shift in tone for some characters. Mixed with things that technically drive the story along, but I just didn’t care. I know we have limited time to introduce all this, and wrap up a trilogy so…
In the last three the story picks up and it moves more into new territory. I enjoyed that more. There were enough new points and remixed lore points that it stood on it’s own as cool, regardless of nostalgia. When that got going, I was more into it. And I am an 84 guy so nostalgia is strong here. But I want NEW and CONNECTED stuff.
So we had time travel, multiverse travel, alternate realities and futures. Yet both the starting points for the G1 guys and Beast guys were alternate from original series. I really think that if this angle was going to be explored – a better way would have been to start with G1 proper and therefore Beast Wars proper, go from there into some sort of multiverse time travel reality hopping adventure and end with a new merged future. Would have truly connected the lore from past to present and given a way to explore any new themes later in an interconnected way. It was a way to do what Marvel and DC have/are/will be doing to get alternate takes of their characters into place. And what Sony is retconning in with Spidey. There is a prime universe (pun intended) that others spin out of. You can bounce around, but they are connected. Mention, embrace that, connect that. Then move on. Revisit every so often.
That can still be explored technically after this series, but I don’t think it was ever the intent. Had the tools and devices in this story to do it, didn’t go there.
Lastly I will speak on the Trilogy overall. I like some of the story. I like some of the look. I like some of the execution. A lot was flat. I know a lot of work went into it, and I’m not sure what it takes to get it done, I know I couldn’t do it. But in the end it needed more. More money for animation, more money for voices. Voice timing and direction, processing, effects. More episodes to let story breathe. The whole package. We had Titans Return, Combiner Wars and POTP at one level. This was an upgrade from that. Next round, there needs to be a BIG upgrade from this. This looked great in big 4k still frame shots. Figure a way to make it move and sound as good as that still frame looks. Tighten up the stories, and IMO – properly do the multiverse.
So all in all for what this was, it was a fun ride. I just want Transformers to get back to being the A-list top tier property it should be. Both in movies and on television. Especially on television because for many of us – both G1 and Beast Wars guys – that’s where it all started. Those characterizations and those story lines got us into the brand and kept us hooked for 25/35 years. Get us back there Hasbro. Give us new exciting stories with a touch of (literal) connection to the past. We’re waiting.
