It’s been a high point of speculation over the last few months but we can now confirm that IDW’s current iteration of the Transformers is coming to an end. More Than Meets The Eye/Lost Light writer James Roberts has confirmed it via his Twitter account. In his tweet he confirms that “the current IDW G1 continuity will end (spectacularly) with Unicron #6, OP #25 and LL #25, all in September. All three are biweekly over summer. We’ve had time to plan for the end, so it’s a proper, un-rushed wrap up. Beyond Sept? New IDW TF comics, new continuity.” Roberts followed this tweet up with a link to MultiversityComics, further confirming the end of the story line.
The story line itself, is massive for the Transformers Comics. Dreamwave comics came to a crashing, unresolved ending in 2004 and IDW picked up the license. Starting from scratch, veteran Simon Furman built a new Transformers universe that began with the “-ation” (Infiltration, Escalation etc..) and “Spotlight” series. From that beginning we got fourteen years of stories. Some good, some bad and some downright amazing. From the -Ation series to All Hail Megatron, to the “Costa”run all the way until 2012 when IDW did something never explored before in the Transformers Universe. They ended the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. From that, we have our most current versions Transformers: Optimus Prime and Transformers: Lost Light. In regards to Lost Light, James Roberts also tweeted “Lost Light will end in the way that I always intended MTMTE to end, and I’m so pleased I can say that. Issue #16 marks the start of a 10 part series finale that is HUGE in scope. Expect things get bigger and deadlier and madder and weirder until… the end of the quest.”
Love it or hate, IDW has crafted a vast universe full of excitement, loss and plenty of controversy with some of their characters which have given fans plenty to remember the run by. But now we’ll see if their new rebooted universe can bring the same complex levels of story telling and further enhance our love for the Transformers and the characters within. As we get more news regarding artists, writers and colorists on the new series coming out in September we will be sure to post the news here.
