Thanks to artist Emiliano Santalucia we can share some Power Of The Primes Evolution Rodimus Prime Concept Sketches for your viewing pleasure.
The images surfaced via Emiliano Santalucia’s Facebook account. We have 2 concept sketches of Rodimus Prime combination sequence and his alt mode. Keep in mind that these are very quick concept sketches and not full designs, but quick renderings to present the idea, to be refined later.
You can check out the mirrored images attached to this news post and then sound off at the 2005 Boards!

Still better then the Headfmaster Hot Rod…. still not as good as classics Hot Rod with FansProject TFX-04 Protector Trailer – Armor add on kit
Rodimus Prime
Actually, I think the rest of him was supposed to hang out the back, like PotP Optimus, but worse. I like Rodimus, even if he is flawed.
KFGatri
Yeah … I'll stick with the flawed but fun figure Hasbro actually released, thanks.
FORT MAXie
Hasbro dose the design Takara Tomy dose the physical molding. Takara Tomy often dose recoloring of the mold and some editing if needed (POTP is not getting that special treatment apparently) for their Japan based run. Great concept just there is a few issues you can see that happened to the toy. Budgeting down the concept tough reality but it dose hurt the line. Staff changes in several areas also are showing with some not as experienced (Trypticon is a prime example). I would of made some changes in this line that if for sure till then 3rd party has to come to the rescue, sadly.
NanakoPreame
Yeah, basically.
KFGatri
So basically you'd pull the head, arms, waist and legs off Hot Rod and insert his chest into Rodimus Prime?
ACMagnus
I remember reading somewhere that Hasbro and Takara work together on molds more often than not.
Requiem Prime
I'm taking this as just a rough idea to get them started. I don't think any engineering was worked out yet.
As for the end product… making him first wave was a smart move, but I question pairing him with a wave-mate.
It's not like they both don't bring sacrifices and issues to the table. Pax doesn't have his own alt-mode and makes a slight mess of Optimus'. But his strongest mode happened to be Roddy's weakest.

If they juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust worked on the arms. This was almost perfect, outside of Protector, this probably the best CHUG Rodimus Prime we gonna get.
[Wing_Saber-X]
Gee I wonder if the other official Transformer toy maker could have made this design concept into reality.

Available NOW – in Optimus Prime's cold dead body .
NanakoPreame
I agree with Split Lip, there's no way that toy can happen in real life. Like, were the hell do you put Hot Rod? It looks like you can make Rodimus just but the trailer itself, only using HR to fill out the tiny gaps and connecting the arms. If anything, it might've been even more parts forming then what we got.
deathzero23
how do you solve a problem like Rodimus Prime (with trailer)?
when it comes to him, there's always a compromise.
general saberwi
Why is it that a quick concept render looks so much better than the final product? Oh yeah, design by committee. Now, I understand that you have a budget, and safety requirements, etc, but c'mon. Bean counters have their place, but it is to inform the requirements of the design, and not the design itself.
deathzero23
Regarding the chest, how do you solved that? From sqaure-ish hood in alt-mode transformed into curvy corners of the chest.
Not even the Masterpiece version solved it.
The MP version of both Hot Rod/Rodimus have diaper flaps.
POTP version have the diaper flaps too.
I guess this is the point we could say that G1 Cartoon Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime have the most design anomalies in cartoon standpoint that is hard to translate in toy form accurately. And maybe and maybe G1 HR/RP will forever be a design puzzle to future Hasbro TF Toy Designer.

Hasbro only lets some of this art be publicly revealed well after the toy hits retail shelves. I wish the toys mirrored the art more like many of you. However this hasn't been the case for years now.
Hasbro's going to do their thing and it's very possible that they just told Santalucia to do his thing without telling him how much would be changed, how the planned gimmick(s) would work, et al. They probably just wanted an idea that they could build off of.
The art wasn't released until now, possibly because it isn't indicative of the final product. Even more people would be pissed now had Hasbro publicly revealed Santalucia's Rodimus Prime design last year and said that's what the POTP Rodimus Prime would look like, only to find the actual toy on shelves now being very different.
Not saying you have to accept the toys being very different from the concept art. It's just more realistic to expect them to be substantially different.
JukeOutlander
The figure looks fine. Only thing I wish they did was transform his backpack into a gun, or at least had it fold up and tuck away somewhere. I mean he's already a parts former. Minor complaint really.
The concept art looks fine too.
starquantumstratos85
the concept arts looks better than the figure we got im still on the fence about potp hot rod/rodimus prime …..I just wish I find a dx9 carry that isnt cost an arm and leg on the secondary market
Hanzkaz
That is what I wanted. It is quite disappointing that after all these years they went with the other design with the flat squarish chest. I was counting on Takara to fix that, UW Computron style.
Cashie
Damn right you did.
