In a bit of fairly unexpected news, IDW Publishing announced today as part of its WonderCon presence that a new Transformers/Rom crossover series will be starting in July, Rom vs. Transformers: Shining Armor. John Barber and Christos Gage will be writing the book, while fan-favourite More Than Meets The Eye artist Alex Milne will be returning to provide artwork! Fellow Transformers veteran Josh Perez will also be providing colours here.
Taking place around 200 years before the current IDW books, this series revolves around new character Stardrive, a Cybertronian raised by the Solstar Order, the organization to which Rom the Space Knight belongs to. When Starscream learns of Stardrive’s existence, Transformers and Space Knights alike come into conflict. You can check out the full interview with Barber and Gage about the new comic at CBR, where they talk about the story and how Milne designed Stardrive closely with Hasbro, and have a look at some previews of the awesome new Milne art (which also features an organization that may be familiar to More Than Meets The Eye readers) after the break!

As a longtime space knights fan THIS event appeals to me. Home we get a figure of our new knight ( assuming she's cool, but I have high hopes).

how many issues is this series?

Sci-fi/horror? Now that is interesting, horror is a little touched genre in Transformers.

I'm in!

Yes, let's only ever have characters from the 80s and keep anything new and potentially interesting as far away from the brand as possible

Woohoo, secret project no longer a secret
I hope people are willing to give this book a look. There is a lot of goodies in it for all to see. Also finally get to do a Sci-fi/horror story with Transformers. Been waiting to do this for a few years now

The time frame would work well with Hearts of Steel.

Oh noes a franchise is growing and changing.
Imagine how boring Spiderman comics would be if he only ever fought the villains that were made back in the 60s
New characters and new stories are a good thing. Otherwise the franchise gets stale and dies.
Its why nobody gives a shit about Superman movies anymore. The only villains he ever fights are Lex luthor and general zod. the same villains he's fought since the 80s

That seems like a pretty lopsided deal in Marvel's favor.

Sunstorm, Road Rage, Crosscut, and others opened that door years before Drift.

Stardrive looks pretty good .

Neat. I'm not familiar with Rom?

I'd recommend still checking out the first ROM trade. I'm a huge fan of the Marvel series and I'm loving the IDW series.

IDW's it's own thing, Drift isn't gonna force his way into a copy of an old G1 tape.

Really looking forward to this. Hope she gets a figure in Generations and the eventual Rom toy line.
Really hoping her character still gets her own Space Knight armor too.
Would be really cool to a see a space knight armor enhanced cybertronian(potentially could even manipulate it like normal transformers do, plus space knights do) against a dire wraith cybertronian.
That has epic written all over it!

That's fair. Same as if I'd never seen any of the Star Wars movies, I might have thought Battle Beyond the Stars was a pretty darn good movie.
I have only leafed through ROM, so I can't really comment other than to say I was planning to give it a shot after reading Micronauts. And reading the first tpb of IDW's Micronauts put the kibosh on that plan, because it was a hacky mess, well below that writer's normal capabilities.

hoping we get a figure of stardrive.

Well, their armour has been heavily implied to be made of one of Shockwave's Regenesis ores, so there's still an 'origin story' connection of sorts.
As somebody with no experience with Rom or Micronauts prior to IDW and tried them out of curiosity, I'm really enjoying both series.

Well, if you're going to mix ROM and Transformers at all, I guess this is the way to do it. Much better than giving the Spaceknights a Cybertronian offshoot origin, which seemed to be the thing a lot of (non-ROM) TF fans were expecting when IDW first announced the shared universe.
My interest in this and in IDW's reimagined ROM is still about zero (and their Micronauts blows, for what that's worth), but I'm glad they didn't go a worse direction.
