Following up on IDW Publishing’s Editor-In-Chief’s announcement earlier about the new series “Deviations“, we now have an interview with the creative team thanks to Newsarama. Deviations will explore the “What If…” scenario that Optimus doesn’t die in the 1986 Transformers Animated movie and the repercussions that may have followed. Writer Brandon Easton and artist Priscilla Tramantano speak in length with Newsarama about all aspects of Deviations including what pivotal scenes may change and how this effects main characters such as Optimus, Starscream, Hot Rod and Grimlock. Transformers: Deviations is due for release in March. Hopefully this will be just the first of “What if…?” stories from IDW in the Transformers Universe!

But Rumble is red…
Illmatic
And what is wrong with thinking this way? I happen to hate Hot Rod.
Shepard Prime
In the actual comic, yes. But in a "What if?" like I mentioned, the Cons would've been victorious if they weren't poisoned by Buster's dad. Remember, they'd pretty much won except for that n then Optimus goes into speech mode saying the bots owed Sparkplug. Then, BOOM! Shockwave.

I'll be checking this out, but my main fear is that this book will be catering to the "Transformers was only good during Season 1 and 2 of the cartoon" crowd. Put me in the camp that hope that Hot Rod still emerges as the hero of this story and saves them from Unicron. Maybe Optimus will get killed off trying to save Cybertron from Unicron and somehow Rodimus will emerge trying to open the Matrix to save Earth. I'm starting to think that this should be a mini-series and not just a stand-alone.

What if… Starscream got trapped within Autobot City instead of shooting his own foot free?
Rodimus Prime
More like Season 4 of the cartoon, since TRoOP was basically a reset button. Not really sure how much of an impact that would make. I'd find it more interesting if they went with "What if the Matrix responded to Ultra Magnus" instead.
Nah, Hot Rod's intervention was a late addition to the plot. I think they only added it in there as it made Optimus look a bit like a chump for Megatron to get a shot off in that situation.

hm, i distinctly remember reading somewhere that in an early draft of the movie, this was actually supposed to happen.
Wonder if that is going to be of any inspiration for this story.

I am soooooo down for this. Sounds like an awesome idea!!! Bought!!!

see now this should be the twist ending.
I'd love that.
much like how IDW Prowl did nothing wrong.
that too would be badass.

And Optimus is also misolored (the gray straps on the arms).
Plus the 2nd insignia which shouldn't be there at all… ugh, I'm so fucking sick of artists making a mess. You get hired to draw a picture set in the cartoon universe and you draw everything off model… senseless and simply utterly unprofessional.
Pretty sure they did won thanks to Shockwave.

I love Kup's caption. Lol old timer taking care of business.

At least it's not Wings of Honour. God, that universe sucked.

I'm so happy the sunbow toon fiction is getting some love like what regeneration one did for the comics.
Now what i really want is a comic that continues where then toon left off

Going all the way back to G1 Marvel for this one:
What if Sparkplug's poisoning of the Decepticons doesn't work and the Decepticons are victorious anyways? What happens to the fallen, energon-depleted Autobots? Does Megatron take no chances and just wipe them out? And, provided issue #4 would play out the same, where does Shockwave fit in there as the Decepticons make Earth it's new empire as they try to establish comminications with Cybertron?
I imagine Shockwave would be obedient since he only took over the Cons because he felt it was logical to do so so we'd likely miss out on one of the best early scraps in that series between Shockwave and Megs.

I'm gonna find it really lame if they do this by stopping Hot Rod from going up there. Although the other cover seems like it's gonna be Prime killing Megatron as he gets the gun.
For the most part the cartoon's skeleton is there. They change somethings like adding lots of Takara and RID characters. Unfortunately for those wanting more out of Season 4 it doesn't directly expand on those events.
Ooo this one's gold.
Autoboty
Here's my imagination going wild…
Hot Rod fights off Kup and jumps to intervene in the big duel between Prime and Megatron, but is shot dead by Megatron's gun before he can even utter "Optimus!" Prime, angered by the death of Hot Rod, summons up the last of his strength and sucker-punches Megatron, resulting in Megatron falling off the ledge and being rendered immobile. Prime makes a driving leap and drives his axe into Megatron's chest, finally killing his arch-nemesis. The Decepticons, demoralized after the loss of their leader, retreat in the late-arriving Astrotrain with Starscream taking the position of 'temporary' leader.
And the story unfolds…
Mr.Deflok
Kup gon' put you down, kid.
HARD RAINBOW
Daily reminder: Hot Rod dindu nuffin!
Starscream Gaga
Sorry, the other cover. Featuring Optimus standing over Megatron's body.
