Last weekend, I asked the members of the TFW2005 forums about what toys they kept coming back to over the years and received some pretty surprising results with some very clear “winners”.
This discussion wasn’t just a one off experiment, as the very subject I asked the readers about was also aimed toward myself in this new opinion piece about the very same subject where I go over five Transformers toys I keep going back to again and again, and also share many of the responses from both the TFW2005 Forum and the TFW2005 Lounge as well as the final results of the poll!
Take the jump to see the article, and as always stay tuned to TFW2005 as news and original content goes live.

I really agree with this. A lot of times the masterpiece toys I've found just are not fun to play with and feel like I'm handling a Yamato Valk toy as far as fragility (not a good thing). There are exceptions like both versions of Op (in my opinion), Grimlock, and to my delight Prowl.
The thing about us Transformers fans and collectors, for me and I get the impression this is the way with a lot of other adult TF collectors too, is, unlike a lot of other adult collectors of other toys and/or models, we actually do like to pull our toys off the shelf sometimes and play with them. So they need to be able to handle that. I've realized I generally prefer the mainline toys that don't scare me to death that I might break an expensive toy, and often they still have some really cool features and stuff.
And as an adult fan who loved Transformers as a child you just can't beat the feeling of getting down on the floor and playing Transformers with your kids. Who would have thought when we were the same age 30 years ago that our own kids would be able to play with updated renditions of the same characters 3 decades later? It's just amazing.

I really didn't like the classics mould when it came out, it was too different to G1 and the deco and arm kibble put me off. However the Henkei deco was much better in my opinion and convinced me to get one. It's a great toy, with the pick up and play factor that I love in main line figures. MP's are wonderful collectors toys but the price, size and in some cases fragility makes them difficult to play with. The classics mould is robust, a good size, has a simple but clever transformation, in many ways it's the perfect all ages toy.

no idea, i only brought him out of my basement to take pics for an article, it's on oversized titanium figure/statue

Wow. So the debate is more of MP-01 vs MP-10? Keep it going!!!
Well, I own the Classics Prime mold.. Henkei version to be exact. This is the best modern take of OP to date. Truck is not dated and still look new in today's modern truck design regardless it was mid or early 2000's the toy was released.
As for ROTF leader, yes it's the definitive movie prime figure ever made. Sorry to AoE LC Prime but it sucks. How I wish DOTM LCOP had a Hasbro release.. Yup there is a mold from Takara via the Striker Optimus Prime, the major difference is prime's Abs where ROTF LC don't have it.
I'm still puzzled why Hasbro didn't bring DOTM LCOP in retail. Is Hasbro that comfy and fool thinking DOTM will like ROTF again? Actually, they failed.
TFP Vehicon, can't argue it's the bad-ass TFP deluxe figure. And you can army build it.
No wonder it's Hoarder prone figure in TF history i guess.
Overall, everybody loves every Optimus Prime toy.

I always have my WfC Megatron handy, because I just love that mold so much. I can't help but fiddle with it all the time
So that's who I can't put down ^^

I'm very glad to see Classics Optimus got so many votes, it really is a great toy overall. It's probably the last Optimus I'd part with.
And I'll still take MP-1 over MP-10 any day. It actually feels like a Masterpiece, MP-10 is good but it just feels like a leader class G1 Optimus Mainline toy.

Code… lots of time and effort went into this results thread, great info….and some surprises, at least for me.

I have to say I'm a little surprised, no a lot surprised that the Unicron mold didn't at least get some votes or mention for the Unicron Trilogy named after him. That toy was a huge deal. We finally got a Unicron toy and those of us who were around since G1 had been wanting one since we saw the movie. And the toy we got delivered in so many ways. It wasn't perfect, but it was still pretty amazing especially at the time. I thought so anyway. Sorry this poll flew under my radar and I didn't vote.

The MP-01 mold was responsible for getting back into collecting Transformers again. I remember standing in Walmart holding the DVD Movie Edition version in my hand and contemplating whether or not I needed to buy this figure as a thirty-plus year old man. I grew up a huge G1 fan and at the close of that era, I never saw anything that paid enough homage to captivate my attention until that fateful day. I gave in to my inner child and the rest is history. I concur that this mold marked a significant evolutionary step in Transformers collecting.

ROTF Leader Prime basically IS a MP. The level of detail, intricacy, and complexity surpass most MPs.

This was a great read! Thanks for the hard work and effort you put into this!

I agree MP-10 is technically 'better' in a lot of ways. However, I got MP-01 on original release way back in 2003 and loved it, it was huge, heavy, well made but more than that it was a revelation…groundbreaking. It was the best Transformer ever made, it surpassed all Transformers made up until that point by a very long chalk, it was the Optimus Prime I'd always dreamed of owning. MP-10 is great, possible the best Optimus Prime toy ever made, but it was hardly a giant leap forward, it was tweeking perfection not creating it. That, I imagine, is why people voted for MP-01 instead.

Bit disappointed that RID Scourge wasn't one of the finalists.

Great article. Ill totally admit to being confused by a number of figures on the overall winners list though (mp-01 rather than mp-10? Classics prime, 'bee and the seeker mold?)

I think it's a lot more simple than you guys are considering
1. Playability: Because he was (at one time) just a $20 Voyager, you never think twice about picking it up off your shelf, transforming it back and forth, moving it around your display, etc… this just makes him much more endeared than the gorgeous Masterpiece that you leave right where it is because you spent so much time making it look just perfect on your shelf.
2. Cost: More people own him.

Actually they meant Classics Optimus Prime, not G1. The 2006 voyager figure.

While I did not cast a vote on some of the newer series. I was not surprised at G1 Prime being the poll winner. He was my vote. Also a good point was made about how many new fans have come on board since the movies came about. Still for me nothing beats good old G1.
Tman978
I'm not. He's frustrating.

mp-01 have
plenty of features ,
comunicators
movable faceplate
working threads
articulable fingers,
die-cast not duck feets or strange type of arms that doesnt looks right
a lot of people belive his head sculpt is better than any other optimus toys

Glad to have been quoted! Really pleased that RofF prime got a high position. I've never been a fan of the classics mold, but I'm clearly in the minority!
