Wow, is this still being debated?

Chromia is 100% a retool of PRID Arcee.

They share all the parts that are cast on Arcee in the matte black nylon plastic (collar, shoulder joints, upper arms, hands, hip sockets, outer thighs, feet, kickstand, the assembly the front wheel's attached to) apart from the handlebars assembly, as well as the waist, front of the torso, and the "cleavage" part, plus maybe the kneepads too, but I can't tell if those are actually a separate part to the shins.

Green highlighted parts are re-used from Arcee, everything else is new.

Chromia sure is one hell of a retool.

Just checked and I can slide a piece of paper right under one of my PRID Arcee's knees (but not the other):

It might be different on the BH toy, but I'm 90% certain now that PRID Arcee's knee are separate pieces glued into place.

The kneepads are attached to the shin in one mold.

I wasn't really sure about them, but I have a suspicion that they might be separate pieces glued on, though, peering really closely at Arcee.

That is considered a retool/remold. Two toys sharing the same basic structure and transformation.

Arcee looks fantastic, and as I stated awhile back, the black used really helps to break up her bland color pallet. It also adds a lot more depth to her as a character and makes her feel just a bit more modernized. (just like it did for her TFA Counterpart)

The solid black patches above her knees just don't look right to me. It makes her hips look shorter & out of proportion. Or it kinda looks like she's wearing knee high boots.

At least the problem is easy to fix with a little white paint.

All white would be more correct and probably the Takara version will feature more white, but I think it looks good. I just hope that the Takara version will not appeal more to me, as I already pre-ordered the Hasbro version.

I've been looking at the pics of Arcee & noticed something I didn't really pay attention to at first. All the black on her looks really bad. Why would Hasbro put all that black on her? Arcee doesn't have a ton of black all over her. I hate it when I have to correct a figure right out of the package. Her knees look ridiculous. That black has to go.

Azalea & Delicate Warrior are still the best Arcee toys out there. Hasbro's is cool & I can't wait to add her to my collection but unfortunately, she's not the best.

Yeah, the clear plastic heel pieces (that also hold the wheels) can be a point of breakage on Chromia.

Ok wait wait I refuse to let us go down this rabbit hole.

Is Energon Starscream a retooling of G2 Smokescreen? No. They have extremely similar engineering, but they don't share a single part or piece. That means that the tooling is all-new, which means Energon Starscream is not a retool.

Is Chromia a retooling of the second Prime Arcee figure? Yes. It is a very extensive one as this sort of thing goes, replacing or modifying maybe 30-60% of the tooling. But that chest is clearly the same piece, which means it's using the same tooling (or duplicate tooling, but there's no way to tell and it would sort of defeat the purpose of doing it this way).

Retooling is a way to economize the manufacturing process by re-using parts. Re-using engineering only economizes the creative process of the toy's concept and "mech design."

Well uh, I feel like if they confined most of the inaccuracy to the backside–the one part of the toy that is least likely to ever be displayed–that that's pretty impressive honestly.

I'd be interested in the creative process behind this character/toy. The toy and the character were probably designed concurrently, given the "Dark Cybertron" marketing gimmick. Sometimes there was a bit of gear-grinding–Nightbeat was never re-designed to match the Bumblebee mold, and Jhiaxus ends up looking TOO MUCH like the Armada Starscream mold, as the artists did not know the extent of the retooling. Nevertheless, as a "new" character to the IDW-verse, I'm pretty sure this was always the way that Chromia was gonna be, leaving the artist with the choice of total toy-accuracy in the art or taking some license.

This actually does explain to me why the IDW Chromia design looked so Prime-ish to me from the get-go.

You're reading way too much into what I said and creating your own rabbit hole while still proving my point about TFP Arcee and Gen Chromia here. Enjoy that.

I hated PRiD Arcee…until I had her in hand. What a fun awesome mold.

I'm def grabbing chroma and G1 Arcee.

Edit: bah, idw this idw that, I really don't care as long as it looks cool and is fun.

Meh it looks close enough to the IDW form: it doesn't have to be an exact copy.

but by using PRID Arcee it doesn't make for an IDW accurate Chromia, at least from the backside. Very disappointing.

Impressive if it were true, but a side by side look at the figure shows that it isn't even near accurate. It still just looks like a remold of PRID Arcee. An utter shame.

Well fine, but I was just going by what you said.
