Back in summer we showed you images of the Xovergen Grand Patriot Prototype. Now thanks to an update by Xovergen we have new images of a painted prototype! It’s shown with 1 of 3 head sculpts.
Grand Patriot is based off of Don Figueroa’s unused Rolling Thunder Optimus Prime design from GI Joe VS Transformers comics. Hit the title bar to see the latest update!

I disagree. Besides feeling like a sort of smallish voyager, his "sleek, modern" styling really detracts from his iconic presence on the shelf. Next to the more traditional Igear Faith Leader, he looks sort of lame (in fairness, Faith Leader is a more expensive, complex piece). Something in the overall proportions just makes him look sort of like a "teenage" Prime to me.

It's the wimpy part that doesn't make any sense. Classics Voyager Prime is anything but wimpy.
coinilius
I don't see how that makes no sense – the voyager classic Prime mold never really tickled me as much as it did other people (that said, I really liked it as Ultra Magnus so maybe it was just a colourscheme issue).

I'm sorry, what? This statement makes no sense.

Thanks but you didn't hear it. lol
Ou sans voix, je viens de tilter que mon apn est si vieux qu'il prend pas le son…
I did a little video for the transformation and took a few pictures, I'll write a review while the video uploads. Sorry in advance for the video quality, my camera is pretty old, the max video resolution is low, the image is dark and there's no sound but you can still see what's happening (thank you VirtualDub brightness/contrast filter) and hey, I think I managed not to put the figure out of the camera angle too much.
The bad news is, while I transformed it a few times for the review, I noticed a few stressmarks where appearing on various area even if I don't have most of the issues talked about in this topic. I'll say more about it in the review.

A local toyshop canceled pre-orders for this, citing QC problems and bad response.

Isn't the fact that so many people are on the fence, and also after release it still takes a while to get a good review of any kind, already saying something about this? I think the pricing + the problems described here is a bit borderline. I am hesitant to consider this for now.
megatroptimus
En français alors? Du moment qu'on voit la transformation!
Birdimus
Really? Your English seems better than most of the native speakers that I see posting on the 'net.
Detroa
If nobody does it before, I'll take some pictures in order to make a review after work. I'm not so sure about making a video though since English is obviously not my primary language.
Josh
Or a video review

So, is ANYONE going to drop a some pictures in a feedback thread for this thing? I'm riding on more info and pictures to decide whether I want to drop some dough now that we have some impressions.

I don't have that problem at all on mine. Did you pull the shoulders/cabin parts up completety before flipping them down while transforming?
I had some other problems though: the white mount of the backpack was assembled the wrong way so it was impossible to transform it correctly, it took me a few minutes before realizing this. It's an easy fix, just had to remove 4 screws to replace the thing correctly but still was a QC error. I also had a problem with the balljointed neck which is holded by a pin: while changing his head, the ball part came with it instead of staying attached to the pin. I replaced the pin by a slightly larger screw and everything is holding well now.
I do like the figure and I think the problems on mine were easy fixes and are now all fixed but I do understand that's the kind of stuff that could annoy people easily: we do not buy figures to have to fix them right out of the box.
I also have to say that the instructions are really lame.
But in the end, I'm still glad I bought it, I love the design, I love the big trailer and I won't hesitate to buy any more Xovergen products in the future if they are as cool as this one.

Yeah, this is a somewhat touchy item. I actually kind of like it even though I have more than a few nitpicks with it. However, I'd be cautious to recommend it. I think if someone really, really likes the design and doesn't plan on handling the thing very often they probably wont be disappointed. Not that it wont hold up to handling, just that it doesn't really 'feel' good in the hands and it can be really frustrating to transform. I'm really curious to hear more hands-on opinions about it.
Word of caution for anyone who has one or will be getting one: The shoulders are so close to the torso that rotating them puts strain on the plastic tabs/slots that hold the shoulder pieces together. There's one point during rotation where the shoulder can't smoothly clear the torso and meets a little resistance. It doesn't feel like much when you are turning it, but if you look closely you can see the two halves of the shoulder trying to pull away from each other. The slots on mine already have stress marks around them, and the plastic is only about a 1mm thick there so it wouldn't take much for the plastic to crumble entirely.
This thing has a lot of great design elements, but it really could have used a little more time in the oven and a few more tweaks to get it just right.

Well based on the problems we've heard we've cancelled our preorder. Neither of us wants to risk the shitiness of this thing until we see reviews first. Such a shame I had such high hopes
megatroptimus
Cool! The figure is less frustrating now, the backpack seems secure. The legs are still a problem when posing though…
