Transformers Animated did a lot of innovative stuff, but also a few throwbacks as well. Like leaving out Sludge and Snarl, then stealing Snarl's name and giving it to Slag! But we'll review him anyway, because you can still find him online for a more or less reasonable price. So take a gander at Deluxe Snarl with the Reaper as your guide, because nobody knows value like Death!

Nice. I recently found this out when the thread was posted in the toy forums. Really makes a difference. His name is Snarl, BTW. Just Snarl. Based off the name of the dude he's based off. (robot mode is all Snarl, from the tail wings to the horned head)

I just picked this one up at retail yesterday and it's amazing how much better he looks, thanks Peaugh. This is clearly how it was meant to be.
Now.. if we could just find an easy fix on the rear end connection for the legs. There's nothing to keep it in place. Perhaps there's already been a mod posted, I'll keep lookin'.

I'm pretty sure the dino-head is mistransformed in robot mode.
It's not the head, it's the torso bits. I just figured it out on mine. The instructions make it look like you need the torso bits lined up directly in bot mode, like so:
But what you REALLY want to do is bring the lower red piece forward and up in front of the grey piece, then push the grey piece back in between the red shoulder halves, like this:
This lets the dino head sit properly up against his chest. That little fix makes a WORLD of difference, and makes Snarl one of the better Wave 3 figures.
maybe once they realized they couldn't get the name Slag they designed the Triceratops with snarl like elements?
I for one will be calling him Slargl.
Well, while Split Lip has a very good point about the design, I think he was meant to be Slag. At Botcon the Animated panel explained there were some problems with some of the dialogue, they said in the first season they had trouble using "slag" as a Transformers cuss because it wouldn't get past the network censor or something. By the time season 2 was in the works, they managed to clear it by using Beast Wars as an example (look, we said it all the time in that show without trouble).
I'd assume Snarlag got renamed because Hasbro saw the situation and decided they couldn't put out a toy named Slag. I doubt shops would have carried him in the UK given how it's an actual cuss out here!
(On the same token, I doubt we'll see Slapper again either. Someone is bound to complain about that one!)
Well i am not a fan of new animated. however i do plan on getting the dinobots. this one is disappointing but good all in all. i don't like the bot mode at all i think it could have been better .also i see very little inspiration from g1 original.
maybe once they realized they couldn't get the name Slag they designed the Triceratops with snarl like elements?
At Botcon, the writers of the show mentioned early on they had issues with TV standards not liking scripts where the characters said "slag" as a curse. It wasn't until someone, most likely Marty Isenberg, remembered they did it all the time on the Beast Wars shows that they were able to get it through.
With that in mind, perhaps the same issue also affected the toy? As far as the robot mode goes, I'm pretty sure it was worked out long before the name was settled on, probably more to fit the idea of this being a "big strong dumb robot" though I must admit the shoulders are very G1 Snarl. Personally though I think the overall design is much more exciting than a faithful recreation of G1 Slag could ever be. G1 Slag basically was the Triceratops stood on its back legs with its mouth open. His Animated cousin has a very clever transformation that I'm still getting my head around. I know which one I like more!
I dunno, I think I'm dissapointed. I wish they were really more like the '84 versions, well maybe they will re-tool them in the new universe line and not do any repaints.
maybe once they realized they couldn't get the name Slag they designed the Triceratops with snarl like elements?
Unlikely, but who knows?
As for my thoughts on the fig itself, I'm torn. I want to get them all, but he reallly is short in both modes.I wish he was taller, like he had some neat expanding trick during transformation.
Why did you compare him to G1 Slag instead of Snarl? Or compare both?
I don't think this guy was meant to be Slag.
Think of it, the rear beast legs for arms, the tail split on the back, the body colour, the horns on the head… it all just says Snarl to me. Albeit Snarl with Slag's alt mode. Maybe they made him a triceratops (sp? lol, it's late) because they, along with Pterodactyls and T-rex's, are the most popular/well known dinosaurs.
He's Snarl, to me if nobody else besides Hasbro and CN.

Now that I've seen him closer, I actually like him. If the club doesnt have some black on it, I will probably paint it.
