The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may soon be feeling the buzz, with the good news that the Bumblebee movie is among the field of 20 films eligible for additional consideration by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee. What’s next?
Later this month, the committee will select a shortlist of 10 films that will advance to nominations voting. Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

The reason The Golden Compass won is because one of the older effects guys working on the film died about the time the votes were being taken for the effects award. Since the people who get to vote on the effects awards are people who have won the award in the past there were votes from other people who had worked with him as sort of a last award since effects people rarely get any life time achievement awards from the Oscars.
It's perhaps one of the most insider of the awards. Heck the 2011 film Hugo got the award by appealing to the older days of effects to push the nostalgia buttons of the people who were voting for the effects award.

Isnt there a new category most popular film?

The fact that Welcome to Marwen made the shortlist over Aquaman and Bumblebee (and MI:Fallout, for practical effects) is freaking laughable.
I predict First Man will win, because it's a "serious movie" that's not quite good enough to get the main awards, so they'll give it this as a consolation prize.
Red Goblin
The fact that Antman and frikin Black Panther is on that list is complete bullshit.

I disagree, Infinity War had some really incredible visual effects and def deserves a nomination. Black Panther is debatable but does have some great visuals too. AMATW also should he nominated imo, as should Solo. It's a shame Bumblebee and Aquaman didnt get nominations but WB wasnt really pushing for a nomination with Aquaman

As expected, it didn't make the cut. These are the final nominees…
I'm a big MCU fan, but even I don't agree that ANY of those movies should be included. Maybe, at best because of the Thanos mo-cap, Infinity War, but even that's stretching it.
And my god, if they're actually including shit like Ready Player One and Solo with straight faces, both Bumblebee and Aquaman should have been givens as well. They each had as many okay-good FX as shitty "can almost see the green screen" ones like those others did. Clearly the only 3 movies that DO deserve to be in there needed to be padded out with some faux competition in the category.
Anyway… I guess this is the part where all the same people that said it SHOULD get nominated a couple weeks ago will now trumpet that awards shows are a waste of time, don't mean anything, blah blah yada yada. Have at it.

Personally I think First Man is most deserving if we're talking about artistic value.

They didn't want a Michael Bay movie winning an Oscar.

Well, CGI was pretty much used for the entire movie of Infinity War. For instance, the battle on Titan was probably almost entirely CGI environments, as was the scene where Thor makes Stormbreaker. With that much CGI, It's amazing that none of the effects come out looking like a cartoon.
I agree that The Last Knight's final battle was on par with the Wakanda battle in Infinity War. But most of the settings in TLK were practical, the CGI was used mostly for the robots and Cybertron (when it's seen at a distance). Infinity War has a lot more greenscreening.

Yep. Golden Compass won? The '07 movie got hosed.

Going by Academy track record it will be either First Man, Welcome to Marven or Mary Poppins Returns. The movies that win are usually critically acclaimed stand-outs: Ex Machina, Blade Runner 2049, Gravity, Jungle Book, Interstellar, Life of Pi.
Some news outlets are calling First Man and Infinity War frontrunners, so I assume it'll end up being First Man.

Yeah. That’s what people mean when they say the effects are incredible. Even on the black order guys they were impressive despite having small screen time.

OK, I'll give Thanos to you; he looked incredible.

Even after all I’ve been through. I still love these boards.
It’s more like Thanos that are the amazing effects here. Like all the realistic emotions and facial definitions were just incredible. Also the amazing effects and attention to detail in the fight on Titan, the ship on earth and the bleeding edge armour. Even if the third didn’t look realistic it was incredibly layered. They’re all just well put together.

I can see what you don’t

Hm, I don't remember anything that particularly stood out in Infinity War. Like if we're talking about just scale, I'd say The Last Knight's final battle was on par with the Wakanda battle.

It had its moments of nice screening, but not even the….'three minutes of awesome' it had are enough to make it prize worthy.
Digger
Yeah. Inifinity war deserves it. So impressive.
And black panther was a bit sad with its effects.
