With Transformers: The Last Knight now out in theaters in most places around the world, Paramount and director Travis Knight are almost ready to turn their attention to the Bumblebee spinoff. The film, which is set to be released next June, is expected to start filming in August.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently sat down with both Entertainment Weekly and Screen Rant in separate interviews to discuss The Last Knight, Bumblebee and the possible films to follow.
“It’s the story of a 17-, 18-year-old girl who, through a series of events, she and Bumblebee find each other, and they make each other whole,” he told EW regarding the upcoming spinoff. “Bumblebee’s a very loving character. He’s got a lot of heart, so of course the idyllic life of these two is interrupted by the evil Decepticons. And how are they going to be able to deal with the problem without Optimus and without everybody else?”
Di Bonaventura went on to tell Screen Rant that the movie will definitely be smaller than the typical Transformers film, but it will still have some big moments.
“It’s a more intimate movie,” he said. “It’s a little bit like Iron Giant which I worked on many years ago. It’s a smaller story but it’s still about these larger issues, the same sort of titanic clashes occur.”
Of course, since the movie will be a prequel to the five Transformers movies and since it will be taking place in the year 1985, fans might question any possibility of a certain vehicle becoming Bumblebee’s alternate mode. Di Bonaventura made sure to tease that possibility when talking to EW.
“You might even see a VW Bug,” he said. “You never know.”
Make sure to check out the complete interviews on Entertainment Weekly and Screen Rant.

But the De Lorean has a strong association with Back to the Future. I can't see it being in the BB movie.
Windsweeper II
Cool, Bumblebee will be a VW! That means the movie will automatically be awesome

If you're talking popular '80s cars, you're not really talking unless you're talking about the DeLorean.

Since the movie is set in 1985, I would like it if all of the cars ( maybe a VW Bug) were from the 80's.
Bumblebee and Barricade could be something like this ( Vintage Road Test: Camaro IROC-Z vs Mustang GT )
Really. It is a yellow Camaro vs a black Mustang. They could put this test in the beginning of the movie. Barricade would get his police marking immediately afterwards.
If Hot Rod was in it, he would be a black (w/ orange) Lamborghini Countach or what ever version with a large spoiler.
I also would like it for new characters to keep the same alt mode that they had in G1.
Like if they had Runabout being a black Lotus Turbo Esprit and Runamuck being a white Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
What are some other popular 80's cars?

Can't wait to follow the production. Exciting times.

How much smaller is a VW Beetle compare to any Camaros before '85. I think BB ( with the same size as in the '07 movie) will look strange shrinking down to fit a VW Bug. It was strange seeing Optimus transforming into his flat nose truck in AOE. Would they make BB robot mode smaller than the other movies? What if they made the VW Bug into Hubcap or Bumper or Volks.

I'm not clear on the exact years…
But are the Knights not in the underwater ship in stasis before hand? The job of the Seekers was to locate the Matrix? I assume they were around before the Allspark landed to.
But you're right, the Seeker's should have had an idea. As for Hot Rod and Bumblebee. If they did arrive during WWII, then I don't see how they would know. I would like to know why Hot Rod gave up and stuck with Vivian's Dad though.
Ikkstakk
Kind of true. As has been pointed out before, the AllSpark was only hidden from sensors after the construction of Hoover Dam in the '30s, and we now know there have been plenty of Transformers on Earth before then. The location of the AllSpark should not have been a mystery to the Knights or the Seekers, and unless Bumblebee and Hot Rod got here during WWII they should have known where it was too.

If viewers were okay with Dawn of Future's Past (what?!), Bumblebee's timeline will look flawless. At least Bumblebee didn't ride time machine/portal (yet).
On the plus side, we might see Jetfire's return since he arrived in earth long time ago.
Purple Heart
No. Bee arrived on Earth in the 40's with Hot Rod looking for the Allspark, he didn't meet Sam Witwicky until 2007, when the events of the first movie takes place. Theres bot retconning here. Bee could have taken the form of a VW Bug during the 80's and later assumed the form of a 84' camaro when he met Sam.
Cykill 1
So I guess they are gonna ignore the 1st movie\'s origin story again, where BB showed up and attached himself to Sia Labeouf?
Ironhide1234
I don't know what to think about it being like the Iron Giant.
Is Lorenzo pulling my pisser again like he did with Optimus and Megatron's backstory in the beginning of the TLK?
What's the deal with this 'girl'. Bee's mission is to find the Allspark/the glasses or whatever? – Considering he's fought in WW2 and this is now the 1980's, its clear he's doing a piss poor job.
BumblebeeNotOP
VW bug for Bee? Oh god please no
TF10
I feel like TF5 is the Bumblebee spinoff already
John TheDestroyer
Jablonsky can do some pretty good smaller scale stuff too.
Prime135
I don't, I honestly hope it's a bit less "epic" and a bit more small scale. I'd be pretty happy if the only Tfs in it were bee and barricade.
bellpeppers
I welcome this with open arms
HawaiianBro808
i hope Steve Jablonsky comes back to score the bumble bee spin off
Ikkstakk
And they bring back Isabel Lucas? Red Dawn with Transformers… I love it.
You mean di Bonaventura Code.

His head has looked basically the same no matter what his alt mode including as a 70s Camaro.. If he's a bug and just because its set in the 80s it isn't going to change that. His robot mode probably wont look much different either it will probably just have bug parts where the Camaro parts were. If he does have a huge design change I'll be surprised
