A new clip from Transformers The Last Knight was aired at the MTV awards yesterday. This clip showcases Anthony Hopkins‘ character, along with the like of Cogman, a tank Transformer, and the one and only Hot Rod… who speaks with a French accent as rumored.
Check out the clip below care of We Got This Covered and see what you think:

And everyone knows who the main cast of Star Wars is and have a better starting point, far fewer people know TF beyond Optimus, Bumblebee, Starscream and Megatron, and Star Wars has never needed to reboot because it always rakes in the money. Transformers not so much.

I'm mostly wondering why they even gave this character the name of Hot Rod. Why name a French Lambo that?
I also wouldn't be surprised if Bay pulls another last minute name change. Wouldn't be the first time.

Easily. Most people get what a multiverse is at this point.

Thanks for this, I appreciate it.

Yeah it'll be hilarious if Megatron grabs Hot Rod as per '86 and bad Optimus just guns him down!

I know right, can't be the only ones who thinks this guy is just canon fodder.

Armada Hot shot was originallly supposed to be Bumblebee, but they lost the trademark during Beast Wars(oh the irony) and couldn't secure it again until later. Hot Shot was of course given a Rodimus themed deco later on, and in Japan was he was Hot Rod(This must have got confusing in Super Link.)

The answer to that of course would be to use a different car and not use the Autobots as simple high-end car product placement but I realize that will never happen.

Nameslaps I can accept. Crap characterization is just fundamental movie making gone wrong.
In 4 TF movies there have maybe been a handful of memorable characters. There's also a distinction between being a character and having character.
For example Skids/Mudflap/Jetfire were characters (for better or worse) but actually didn't have much in the way of development.
The dream is get some Nolan Batman level character development going but that's not even a pipe dream, it's so far away.

It's the only 'shit' we've got sadly.
As long as it pulls in $1bn+ with minimal story, character etc we'll still get the same stuff over and over again.
Critics give it mediocre reviews, we go see it 1-5 times each and the cycle continues.
Transformers screen media has been middling for quite some time.
I would hasten to guess that the last really solid Transformers TV show was TFA and even then your mileage may vary.
I'm yet to see a recent Transformers TV show to be a good as the Avatar TV series for example.
I'm yet to see a Transformers movie as good as a major Marvel movie. Heck I'd take a TF movie comparable to Pacific Rim.

Ah, alright, it happens.

My bad, quoted the wrong post. I was mean't to be replying to That Guy's.
samisham
What? I didn't even mention that. What you're referring to is one of the most uncomfortable scenes in any movie I've ever seen. What I was saying was that I don't mind the choice of an accent for a character. Did you mean to reply to someone else?

Oh look where this thread's gone…

Oh, I really am going to like this Hot Rod. This movie finally caught my interest. Thank you Hot Rod.
MnemonicSyntax
No. Apparently his name is Bulldog.
And it's "Warpath." Not "WarPath."

An alternate but separate universe. Where somethings are familiar, while others are not.
Because they called him Hot Rod, there is an expectation that he's supposed to be some established character. There was nothing ever stated that those rules need to apply. There just isn't. Sorry.
Armada Hot Shot was supposed to be Hot Rod, as I understand it (I might be wrong about that) and nothing invokes "Hot Rod" to me with his appearance.
Regardless though, people can now look at movie Hot Rod and see that "hey, this is movie Hot Rod!"
No, I get the difference. And I'm grasping it. What isn't being grasped is that this is a new character in the movie verse named Hot Rod. It's like, there's more than one Liam out in the world. Or Mike, or Bob, or Matt.
I'll reiterate, and hopefully this is the last time I have to. There is nothing that indicates having a specific name requires any sort of familiarity to it. That's not a feeling, but fact. Other characters like Sideswipe do not have such "familiarity" and from there, the movieverse has reign to do what it likes.
I'm sorry that he's unfamiliar. To others, and countless new fans, he will be. And so it goes.
Agreed, except one part.
I get it. On an emotional level, I totally understand. It's based on nostalgia, it's based on familiarity, which is something that people rely on to feel comfortable.
From a factual standpoint (and how I usually base my discussions) I don't consider the opinions invalid. I just consider them to be too hung up on that emotion to garner a response that is anything but said emotion.
I'm not heartless, I'm not cruel. I guess I'm just not hung up on that emotion, but I get why people can be hung up and are.

Change is all good! I don't think anyone's against change – we all get the Bay movies are another fresh new iteration of Transformers and should be very different aesthetically to other iterations.
Beast wars Silverbolt isn't a good example of what's going on here with Hot Rod (and some people's issues with it) because he really is a completely different character to G1 Silverbolt! Not even supposed to be the same guy reinvented! Beast Wars exists within the same G1 continuity but different eras – it's a different guy with the same name. Same as Beast Wars Megatron isn't G1 Megatron. So that pretty much is a nameslap, yeah, a homage if you like, and not expected they should be anything alike.
But that's not what this is – the Bay movies are an alternative Transformers universe, like RID, animated, whatever, and just like movie Optimus Prime is still supposed to be that Prime (heroic Autobot leader guy) reinvented, this is supposed to be that Hot Rod – not just some completely different character sharing the name.
Urrghhh – this isn't about people expecting movie Hot Rod to be a carbon copy of G1 Hot Rod or any other specific iteration of Hot Rod! It's not Geewhiners whining, or the IDW equivalent, etc. Like I said everyone gets movieverse is a completely new iteration. But it's still supposed to be the established character Hot Rod (cos they called him that!). Basically every single other iteration of Hot Rod, fiction or toy, is pretty instantly recognisable as being Hot Rod through at least some common aesthetic elements. You look at him and think 'ah this is this universe's Hot Rod – cool' (or I hate it or whatever). With this guy though… nothing. He'd have to hold up a sign saying 'I'm supposed to be Hot Rod' for you to have a clue.
That is the difference here (that I still dont think you're grasping! ). There's nothing at all about his design that identifies him as movieverse's Hot Rod character. You have to be told. Why even bother presenting him as the movieverse's Hot Rod if he doesn't resemble the character in any way? As MindChamber put it – may as well just call him Baguette! Literally all they needed to do was make the car red/orangey with maybe a yellow rear spoiler. Or just make some kibble form something that looks like his pretty iconic shoulder wing in bot mode. Something, anything that says yeah I'm Hot Rod. Then everyone would be happy! But nope.
Oh well I already said I don't personally care that much after 5 movies, so what am I prattling on for? We'll just have to agree to disagree and if you still want to consider some peoples' disapproval of this iteration of Hot Rod looking nothing like any other Hot Rod as 'invalid' or whatever, then knock yourself out!
