Is Alliance the best way to earn more energon? I'm mostly doing solo/story mode and occasionally some raids

Play through all your characters; the longer winning streaks you have, the faster you'll gain points. Then ask for help recharging the characters you used. It seems dumb, but it actually helps your alliance members, because they gain loyalty points (up to a daily max) for helping you. And it costs them nothing, which makes no sense. Likewise, when you see alliance members need help, send it, so you can build up your points.
And about the loyalty points, in the Marvel game, it's 365,000 for a 4-star character and 800,000 for a 5-star, so it will take some time. Even though they don't have this offer yet in the TF game, I'd start saving now for when it eventually comes.

Thanks for that info! I've been like a kid in a candy shop throwing my alliance points away.

Arenas huh, I'll give that a chance. Thanks

A specific character of your choice? No. But they have offered Ultra Magnus and Bumblebee both at flat prices, and there's no reason to think they won't offer others down the line.
And as with the Marvel version of the game, there is an in-game currency you build up over time that you can use for "premium" crystals. But if you save that currency in the Marvel game, rather than throw it at a "premium" chance at a 2-star dupe, they periodically offer the chance to use that in-game currency (not real money) for a 3-star crystal, and other times for a 4-star crystal. All you have to do is hold back that gambler's urge and you can get a powerful character when the offer comes up. They haven't done this yet in Forged to Fight, but I'm sure it's coming. In the few months I played the Marvel game, the 4-star crystal offer came up maybe 4 times, and the 3-star offer easily came up a dozen times.
On that note, there's a similar thing with the alliance loyalty points currency. I wouldn't throw them away on random crystals or whatever. In the Marvel game, you can save them to by a 4 or a 5-star character. It takes a while to build up, but it's another sure thing with no gambling involved.
edit: And oh, yeah, I forgot to mention the most obvious way to get a new character: by playing the arenas. I haven't built up enough characters to go all out on these arenas yet, but I've gotten a ton of 3-star characters in the Marvel game. 4-stars are admittedly harder, but 3-stars are doable if you put time in. And that's free, too (I mean, other than the time, I guess).

Is there an easier way to get a specific character? Or more precisely, a guaranteed way.

Added some screen shots to the first post.
Yes, grew up on this comic I've always been a big fan.
Awesome read! This stuff is cool to know how things get done.
Per request of @Superquad7 is how that came to be.

You are horribly misinformed. You do not have to spend a dime of real money in the game to be competitive and get characters. What you are talking about is only one of the ways — and the least reliable way — to get characters.

Well, I mean, you are forced to fight with the horrible lottery system. It didn't say anything about winning.

I keep misreading this game as "Forced to Fight".

Threw $15 at crystals, all dupes of two stars. It should have landed on a 4 star Soundwave but did one click further to a 2 star Prime. I'm pretty done with this one, the micro transactions are really rough. I'm playing Jurassic Word on iOS at the same time, and it's night and day. I've put about $30 into both games so far and for JW I have a well stocked park with a huge pile of creatures including several event or tournament creatures. This game is just putting blocks in front of you constantly, and the RNG is the worst kind of insulting as you can time it and watch it go long or short to ensure you never get anything decent in the drops.
It wouldn't be so bad if the selection of characters you could get without paying wasn't so small. Instead you can unlock special characters in Arenas. If you finish top rank, which unless you pump a ton of money and time into the game you won't.
I really hoped this would be good after the awful hunk of garbage that was Earth Wars, but the non stop assault of paywalled content is insane.

Couldn't have said it better myself

I mean, I spent at least 60 dollars or so on microtransactions in Heroes of the Storm, back when I was playing it regularly. I never felt like I was being cheated, since their model actually is fair. You want that character, you buy that character and get that character – or you wait and unlock it with in game currency you earned just from playing the game. The model these free-to-play Transformers games have is just insane in comparison, and also unsustainable long-term. Which is why they keep shelling out these games – by the time one of them has become old hat, behold, a brand new game is about to release, and it wants your money all over again!
robh
Nope. I don't even mind the micro transactions as long as they are fair.

This game looks so fun… too bad it's riddled with terrible microtransactions. I was reading about how transformers are unlocked in this game, and apparently the real money you spend on a specific character only buys you a chance at getting said character. You're just as likely to get a duplicate of one you already own (probably more likely, if their shady business model is any indication). Also, they introduced a new Soundwave-exclusive in game currency – you can't even play the lottery for his specific unlock without purchasing some of it.
We're never getting a good Transformers game again, are we?

Kabam has also shared an interview between their creative director and his team on the development of Soundwave for the game. It's an interesting read, please check it out:

Just watched the youtube video of Soundwave's moves (cause I wanted to see Ravage). That's pretty cool! Especially with Ravage and Laserbeak (glad they chose MP versions). Forget the game.. make a web series With almost no effort, it'd be better than Combiner Wars.
