Everything is fodder.
Titans Return Voyager Wave 3 brought a pair of new versions of the faction leaders to the table. Last time, we took a look at Optimus Prime, and this time, we’re taking a look at Megatron!
Reborn in a powerful triple changer body granting him superiority in land and air combat, this new version of the Decepticon marauder is an impressive figure, loosely inspired by his current body in the IDW comics – assuming said body had scanned an Earth tank. Solid in all his modes, he is a lot of fun to transform and mess with, and the robot mode has excellent balance, aided by the wingtips on the ankles. There’s also some good sculpt work on the head and the chest, which helps to separate this mold from its intended reuse as Blitzwing. It’s the planned reuse as Blitzwing which hurts this one, since the mold has so many elements intended for use as Blitzwing which makes this a perfect Blitzwing toy, which just happens to have come out first as Megatron. This is a pity, because the mold does look good as the Decepticon leader, and is deserving of consideration as more than just “that Voyager Megatron they’re retooling into Blitzwing”.
Check out the gallery to see for yourself, along with some more detailed thoughts after the break.
Titans Return Voyager Megatron Gallery
Pros
- Solid in all three modes
- Good range of poseability, with ankle-wingtips helping balance
- Good range of weapon options
- Excellent headsculpt
Cons
- Sharing a mold with Blitzwing means a lot of the details are based on Blitzwing, rather than Megatron.
- The tank mode has some obvious jet mode parts exposed, such as the thrusters.
- Some of the panels did not tab in properly on the jet mode and the tank mode – particularly where one of the wings folded over on the tank mode, and one of the side sections of the fuselage for the jet mode.
- The stickers are not the best – on mine at least, they were lifting a little on the edges already.
Bottom Line
A nice and solid release with a very good headsculpt, who is a lot of fun to play with and transform. He’s let down by the poor stickers and the fact he is so obviously meant to be Blitzwing that being Megatron seems almost like an afterthought, which is a pity since there are a lot of good features here. However, Megatron or Blitzwing, whichever you choose, you’ll be treated to a fun toy, and one deserving of a spot in a collection.
Windsweeper II
They might do just that for one of the boxsets.
I was actually wondering if there was a way to make him look more WFC/FOC.
He would make a nice Sunbow pre-earth Megatron.
aptkane
I love him. He's a great IDW version, or just a neat addition to the excellent TR Line up.

Yeah, I can't stand this plastic either. I bough the Takara Blaster solely for that reason. I dunno if Takara will make a Megatron out of the mold but if not I'll have to just stick with the Blitzwing.

Even though the style of this tank is a bit WFC/FOC-ish, for a TF toy, it does relatively well at real world tank design rules :
– low as possible silhouette
– angled armor where it matters
– even the 'wings' at the rear are pretty much like the side skirt armor on real tanks. It's protection against HE (high explosive) shells.
In short, this is a better representation of a tank, than say…… TR Sky Shadow's/Overlord's chubby high silhouette tank or even TR Sixshot's 'tank'.

Yeah, it looks really bad in pics. I saw it on shelves though and it looks much better in person.
But I'm still going to wait for Blitzwing/G2 Megatron.

With Hardhead/Quake's cannon (and some green paint with purple camo), he would make an excellent G2 Megatron.

I really can't get past the cheap looking gray plastic. We were spoiled by the premium look of CW Megs, and it's weird that Hasbro would take this one back to swirly gray. I'm hoping Takara does right by this design.
KnightStrike
That bot and tank modes of this look really good. I can't not see Starscream when I see the jet mode though. All the details on that mold are just screaming for some paint and a wash.
Sol Fury
It does at that – really helps to give the front a solid line. I've added a couple of pics to the gallery, since it looks so decent:

This is such a fun figure. Hasbro did a great job with this one

Thanks.
It doesn't look like how I thought it would, but does fill in the front a bit.
Nice paint on the small gun, BTW, it must make the combined cannon look good in robot mode.
If I get this Megatron, I'll probably not use the cannon, though.
It would be my Lost Light 'Pacifist Megatron'.

Quick question.
This was mentioned above by Mattw38 as an option.
Can someone post a picture of the tank mode with the flipped forward to hide the thrusters, if possible?
I'd like to try this, but I'm not likely to get this mold for a little while.
Thanks

Funny thing is, after the Toyfair pics, I *prefer* this mold as Megatron, even though it is clearly intended as Blitzwing.
Colors, mostly. It just looks good in grey, black, and red.
Basilisk
I done the same except I have the Henkei Optimus
Aigis
I found mine at Wal-Mart. He's a fun figure.

This and Op just started showing up in Target, here in Michigan. I wouldn't fret yet, it's just a slow rollout – I just found Soundwave (also at Target) two weeks ago.

Those sticker are ridiculous. Immediately replaced
