Transformers Dark of the Moon has become the fastest movie ever to reach the $500 million dollar mark in worldwide totals. And we promise that we’ll stop updating on how much money Dark of the Moon is making – as soon as it stops breaking records!
Here are some base stats for you, courtesy of BoxOfficeMojo:
– Dark of the Moon surpasses both “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in how fast it took to get to $500 million worldwide (PotC:OST and PotC:aWE took 10 days, DOTM took 8)
– Dark of the Moon is sitting at $214 million domestically
– And while it may be staggering to believe, Dark of the Moon has earned $297.1 million in foreign markets … wow!
– Dark of the Moon has yet to open in China or Japan, which combined, could contribute up to $100 to $150 million to the total grossings
And more importantly…
If Dark of the Moon can survive the upcoming hiccup (Harry Potter), then it is very possible that Dark of the Moon will reach the $1 billion mark by the end of the summer, making it the 9th movie ever to hit the $1 billion mark.
Five years ago, who would have thought that our beloved Transformers would be a billion-dollar movie franchise, let alone have a single movie possibly draw in $1 billion dollars? Love it or hate it, the facts and the green are there! Discuss away!

It's at $994m and change… even if it doesn't make another penny overseas, it's a 100% certainty DOTM will make $1 billion.
That's pretty damn awesome.

I'm actually wondering now how DotM will fare against Potter. DotM's still ahead by about $20 mil, according to Box Office Mojo, and it's still waiting for Japan's totals to come in. Meanwhile, Potter's opened already at all its major markets, so no major upswing to look forward to.
Japan's take will certainly help close the gap in the foreign earnings totals, and DotM has a $40 mil lead in the domestic take.
It's actually looking like a pretty close race.

I'd say at this point it is merely a matter of time until it hits that magic 10 digit number.

I'd be willing to be the fiver in my wallet that HP will hit 500 million in five or six days. Still, Dark of the Moon has made $762,800,000 in less than 20 days. Good odds for any Greek I say

It was expected but at least Transformers had two weeks to itself unlike alot of movies this season.
Heck Captain America comes out in 5 days. While it wont demolish Harry Potter it certainly wont help.

So… Transformers is an "event film", and the one whose advertising campaign has been marketed as "see the last chapter!" isn't? I can see the logic in a lot of arguments against DotM, but this one really doesn't hold up.
But if anyone is surprised that Potter did this much in the opening weekend, they just weren't being very realistic. The films are huge, and their success really doesn't impact the fate of the Transformers franchise at all. DotM made its money.

Arent all movies events? Large gatherings of people paying to get into a central arena to watch something?
I think the Transformers movie hate is down right hysterical. People use phrases that can be applied to a million other movies but make it seem like its solely accurate to Transformers.

DOTM did it (500 Million) in 9 days, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 going to do it in 4 days : http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3211&p=.htm
By the end of 3rd day it reached 475 million. Surely it'll reach 500 million at the end of the 4th day.

That critic is a joke. He's not met one person who liked Pearl Harbor? Complete and utter horse shit. If that's the case, he needs stop hanging out with chimney sweeps and actually interact with us lowly street walkers. And summer blockbusters always make money? Waterworld, Stealth, Speed Racer, Speed 2, the list goes on. Maybe he's never heard of Google either, because it took me all of two seconds to find this list.
